That Feel When...

My older sister and I often talked about the 60's 70's and 80s. She was a card carrying 60's hippie. One of the things she would say:

We changed the world with our [60s] music. That was an unprecedented phenomenon.

Oh, the arrogance of Boomers. It would always invoke an eye roll with me. Every generation loves their music. They fondly remember simpler times, their youth, etc. Yes, the Beatles were awesome and the Stones and The Who and all the rest. But so was Mozart, Beethoven Tchaikovsky, Talking Heads, Richard Hell, the Sex Pistols, the Ramones, and many many many others that came long before and long after the 1960s.

Changed the world my ass.

I remember listening to Neil Young being interviewed. I think it was the King Biscuit Flower Hour. The show allowed a few callers. Some nut job calls in to ask Neil a question. he says, "What was in your mind when you wrote Cinnamon Girl? It had such an effect on me. I somehow related to what you were trying to say."

Neil Young paused a second and he said... "It just a song, man. It's rhyming words with music. I was laying in a hospital bed suffering withdrawal from heroin addition. I had a 105 fever, was sick and half out of my mind. I don't know what it means."

I would not be surprised if the caller hung up then blew his brains out. The bubble he lived in burst. I think there are parallels to people who suffer from this type of idolatry and the wack jobs throwing fireworks at ICE agents in Minneapolis.

One of my pleasant childhood memories was Drake's Cakes.
Drake's had a similar line of snack cakes to Hostess, just with different names. One exception is Funny Bones. Hostess does not have a corresponding competitor.
Drake's does not seem to be available here, but with the internet just a keyboard away, I was able to re-live a taste of childhood today. Yea!! 😋

Last time I was craving a 'bone I ALMOST went the internet route, the desire was that great. :D I think that was about 5yrs ago.
But then I witnessed (and purchased) a box in a store (I forget which) and my desire was sated. 😋
Coincidentally, I've been thinking about them lately and have been semi-looking. I try to avoid the snack aisle when I shop, usually because nothing interests me. I will have to see if they are in stock the next time I shop... 🤔

When you are snack hungry, Little Debbie has a snack for you!

Your evening is ruined because now you know all she is going to wanna talk about for the rest of the date.

So, this is a place to vent.
Vent your frustrations, your anger, your disappointment.
It is also a place to celebrate your triumphs, your accomplishments, and your victories over the forces of evil at home, in the workplace or in public.
In short, anything you wish to announce to the world whether it be a lament or a conquest.

Here's mine:

TFW...
You wake up in the morning Sunday and the house feels a bit cool.
As the day progresses, you note the temp gradually falling and know there is something wrong with the heat pump.
A check of the breaker panel shows the 50A breaker for the outside unit is tripped. Turn the unit off at the thermostat, and it resets, but trips as soon as you turn the thermostat back on.
This is not completely unexpected. I just wish it would have happened in April instead of January. The heat pump was installed in either 1990 or 1991, I don't remember. So, I have been waiting for this day to come, but I got more than my monies worth being heat pump life expectancy is 18-22 years.

Got the first quote on a new system. Just shy of $11K. Waiting on another estimate from a second guy.
As a parting shot, the electric bill came today, and the old unit ran the bill up to $442 before it shit the bed. (it's usually about $250-$275)

So, for now, we're effectively "glamping" with portable heaters to get by. Makes me glad I didn't live back in times when houses had only a fireplace.
On the bright side, thank goodness the weather has been mild. I look forward to the increased efficiency that 30+ years of advancement offers. The new unit is supposed to blow warmer air than the old and lower the electric bill. I look forward to being convinced on both counts.

Think we are somewhat close on the map same region.
I have found natural gas to a better option. Water Heater, stove & heat. 9 months out of year bill is around $50 to $100 ( phfft women and 2hr showers test that 40gal h2o htr) this yr 3months $160+/-.
Electric about same but reversed. July August hits $300 depending on company staying etc.
Mini split units work well and gas works when I loose power 10x a year from drunks and lighting. Only 2 homes on our line out here, we are the LAST of the LAST!

Renewed my Driver's License today. I would have done it online but for some reason the website came back with "unable to authenticate your license" although I was able to pull up my status (good) at the same site. 🤔 And the number to call never had a Customer "Service" rep available and would promptly hangup. 😠 Since it was getting close to a week past my birthday (ie: my license is "expired") I figured I should go directly to the DMV and get it done. My local DMV is about 10min away.

The DMV was busy today but I was there and I gotta get it done. Adding to the busyness was that an office a couple cities over was closed for renovations so some of those people had come to this office. Checked in and took a seat. I chose a seat next to a couple clean-looking women versus next to a not-so-clean looking man. ;) There is a screen that shows "now serving" and I was number 6. After about 5min I had moved to number 5.

While sitting there, I smelled a disagreeable odor I think was coming from the not-so-clean guy 3 chairs down, who was now sleeping. There were no other open seats that looked any better so I dealt with it. Then a guy came and sat down behind me and was breathing heavy and talking to himself. Fortunately, I couldn't smell him. :D

I played a couple games on my phone and after about a half hour at number 5, I went to the front desk to consider making an appointment and coming back another day. The next available appt. was in a week so I opted to stay and get it over with. I started reading "Common Sense" on my phone and before I knew it my number was called. :)

The lady at the counter was nice and the first order of business was an eye test. I was a little nervous as the tests I took at home had me at about 20/30 left and 20/40 right but who knows what their screen will show. 🤔 I don't wear glasses, BTW. I asked for an alcohol wipe for the vision machine but she was out and gave me an envelope to use as a barrier instead. There is a bar you have to push against with your forehead and who knows what filth is on it! Passed the test with flying colors! FL requirements are 20/40 in the best eye corrected or uncorrected.

The first pic was sub-par and she let me shoot another one which was acceptable and I was even smiling in it! (y) That will be my license pic for the next 9 years. I asked her if she could do a little Photoshop on it to make me look a little better which she though was funny. :) Paid the money and out the door I went! All told, it took about an hour...

You should have maxed out like this guy... :ROFLMAO:

They print and laminate the license while you wait and she mentioned the number would change and it could affect any accounts associated with it which were none in my case. She slid this piece of paper in my direction while I was in my wallet getting the debit card and I saw it out of the corner of my eye. "No, that's not my license." :D

When I did get my license, it was literally "hot off the press!". :)

TFW, not only doesn't it pass the smell test, but it also pegs the BS meter...
And that "closed cooling system" needing tens of thousands of gallons of make-up water daily is going to lower my water bill too, huh?

Where are all the Eco-Warriors protesting the environmental impact at?

TFW, got into a yellowjacket nest weed eating today. Little MF's co-ordinate their attack, wait and sting you all at the same time.
5 hours later and the sting sites are still on fire. The one through the glove into the pinky knuckle hurts the worst.
Took antihistamine pill and applied Benadryl cream. Ain't doing a damn thing. 😢

An old doctor I knew used to say in situations like this, to “take two aspirin and go to bed with the nurse”. Not trying to downplay your suffering, I know it hurts, just trying to lighten the mood.

No worries. The pain is manageable. Just surprised it hasn't diminished in what is now 6 hours.

TFW, when I was a young man, you would be in the grocery store and hear what we used to call "elevator music". Percy Faith, Lawrence Welk kind of stuff.
Today, when I made a beer run to the store, I'm shopping to Stairway to Heaven. Now this song defined rock music for my generation when the transition from soft rock of the 60's to hard rock of the 70's occurred. It caused me to have a few thoughts.

1. You know you're getting old when your generations music is playing in the grocery store. This isn't by chance. The marketers are playing to the demographic spending the most money. Once they age out, the music will change.

2. The music of the 70's and 80's appears to be hanging on longer than in previous generations when the pop music seemed to fade away after 20-30 years. Classic Rock is still a thing.

3. I can now relate to my grandfather who couldn't stand rock music. I now feel the same about Rap.

4. All you Millennials, Gen-X, Gen-Z folks. Just wait, the same fate awaits you all. :ROFLMAO:
I just hope Stairway to Heaven is still playing in the grocery store 10 years from now.

"Beat It" by MJ was playing in my favorite ACE hardware store as I was checking out. They all know me there. I proceeded to amuse the clerk with a moonwalk, hat tip, finger point and "hee-hee-hee"... :D

Need video of said moonwalk to believe.
There was a movie called White Men Can't Jump. Pretty sure that also applies to moonwalking... ;)

TFW, This last order from Midway got me thinking.
Back in the 90's, before everything was internet ordering, I used to place an order verbally over the phone to Midway. Talk to a live person. Give the CC info verbally over the phone.
I'd order on Monday and have it by Wednesday, 2 days later. Midway used UPS exclusively back then.

This last order was placed late on the evening of June 9th. Call it early AM on the 10th before it gets processed.
Now they use USPS. Tracking number says expect delivery Tuesday the 16th. So, what used to take 2 days now takes a week.

As can be seen from the tracking history, it took 2 days after the PO got it for it to make it out of the state of Missouri.

Now it is at the Greenville Distribution Center. This distribution center is 1 hour from my local PO. As stupid as it sounds, all mail from my local PO goes to the DC, even if it is being mailed to an address in the town it is mailed from. It goes 1 hour to the DC, and comes back...sometimes days later.

This is the black hole for parcels with my name on them. I have had parcels get to G-ville and languish for days there. I have had the DC re-direct my parcel to another PO in another state, then when they send in back, they re-direct it again to BFE.
In several instances I have had to file a lost package notification. That triggers someone looking onto it. But if you want to file a complaint later, you better screenshot the tracking history beforehand. Once the parcel makes it back to G-ville, they delete all the info on those side trips your package took from the tracking history.

In spite of numerous complaints to the PO website about missing/delayed/re-directed parcels at the G-ville DC, the PO keeps raising the rates, and the service continues to get worse.

Let's see how long it stays in G-ville this time. It's been there since yesterday at 1300. Expected delivery June 16th by 9pm.

Got another parcel coming from Portland, OR USPS.
Twice as far, ordered same time as the Midway items, but same delivery date.

When I was working, the employees had a saying for situations like this that defied explanation.
It was "We make chemicals. we don't make sense."
It seems that is also true at the PO. 🙄

TFW, This last order from Midway got me thinking.
Midway "free" shipping tends to use the USPS/UPS "service", I forget what it is called nowadays. UPS picks up and ships the USPS bundles going to certain POs and DCs. Once there, it takes time for the bundles to be unpacked and sorted by USPS union employees.

While the majority of USPS employees are decent people and efficient workers, there are some that are a waste of oxygen and wouldn't have a job were it not for the union. I've known postal workers that have described the system and it is less fair to good workers and more fair to bad workers if that makes sense...
