After driving my current car for 10 years and 212,000 miles, I'm finally looking at a new car.

The top candidate is the 2024 Subaru Outback Onyx Edition XT (turbo). Bang for the buck, this thing is "tits!"

Any happy (or unhappy) Outback owners here?

My last Subaru....

You have had a Subaru before. You know the deal. You are a lesbian trapped in a man's body. No need to feel awkward there. Every make and model has its weaknesses and strength.

With the turbo, you can blow the engine. Naturally aspirated, it may outlive you. Do you really need to go that fast? If yes, go for it.

I'm sort of starting to take long looks at the car lots. Much different than a year and a half ago. The lots are starting to fill up. When I see $10k off sticker, I may jump. I've seen it before. The only time I had to pay retail was when we got rear ended and the SUV was totaled. I had to buy something quickly. Every other car has been on my terms.

The turbo in my STI lasted 192,000 miles with 2 engines. It outlasted both engines.

Turbos don't cause engines to blow. But, I can tell you what does: Broken oil pick-up tube. Ask me how I know!

The reason for the turbo isn't speed. It's horsepower, which translates to better acceleration.

Yep. The pendulum has swung HARD from just a year ago. Dealers are DESPERATE to sell now. I put in a quote request through Edmund's-dot-com, and the first response from a dealer was in less than 60 seconds. No shit. Literally, less than a minute. I've gotten multiple emails and texts from various dealers.

If you modify it, watch for blowby. Non-Stock subies are notorious for piston skirts cracking/ring failure. I've done many a motor at work on Subies and they've all been for the same exact issue. But like I said, they were all slathered with upgrades and in the high 300 to mid 400hp range. Stock is good.

The only negative I have about Subarus are that all the nanny systems are very intrusive. The car will try to steer for you, brake for you, turn off the engine... Sure, you can turn them off, but they reset every time you turn off the car.

That Onyx Edition is a sharp looking car!

That happened with my 2nd engine on the STI. Broken piston ring land grenaded the engine. And it was a built engine with forged Wiseco pistons.

I won't be modding this car. It's an SUV / commuter car, not a track car.

Everyone I know with a Subaru really likes it a lot! So I say if you're in the market for a new car and you find a good deal on what you want, then go for it. 👍

Please don’t drive it like the typical Outback/Forester driver. Got that cruise set at 68 screwing up everyone’s commute. Accelerating from every light with just that slightest amount of pressure on the go pedal.

I've had 2 Subarus before... just not the Outback.

The (rather unique) form factor of the Outback really seems to suit my current needs.
