Video Amazing heli-skiing footage in Alaska.

I'll probably never snow ski again in my lifetime. :( I'm happy to have been able to ski many of the mountains in New England. :) I rarely did black diamond runs mainly because I didn't want to tear my body up. I had long skis/snowboard and would zip down the medium trails trying to avoid the slowpokes. ;) But the views were often quite spectacular. First run of the day, top of the mountain I would play Appetite For Destruction on my Walkman. The first song is Welcome to the Jungle. :D

I used to say that skiing was the most fun you can have with your clothes on. I was what I would call a "strong intermediate" skier. I could run the occasional "black diamond." But a black diamond at Bear Mountain in California is not the same as a black diamond at Vail, which is not the same as a black diamond at Jackson Hole, WY. So, it depended on the black diamond, but I was mostly a "blue" run skier.

That was over 30 years ago. Would I ski now? I'm afraid not. I can't afford to get hurt, and I surely would.

Don't forget RFKJR's brother Michael. Ran headfirst into a tree playing football on the slopes. He was not missed... :devilish:

I did a fair amount of skiing as a teenager and when I was in college. Killngton, Sugarloaf, also in the Poconos. When I was working in DC I skied in Wintergreen fairly often. It's near Camp David. Then skiing and snowshoeing in the PNW. Some climbing too. I did the Rainier summit. I trained for almost a year. I'd never do that again. It's crazier than jumping out of a plane.

These days... I live in the south and after many years of traveling I have little interest in ski vacations or any sort of travel. I have come to dislike cold weather. I'm also no longer 25. My health and fitness is good and I plan to keep it that way and long as I can.

I had an acquaintance in high school who ran into a tree long before Sony Bono had his incident, but I am still hoping to start skiing again next season.

I will start slow, but I hope to be able to at least get to the intermediate slopes after another season.

Back story, we got free season passes and free lessons since I was 8 as my father's firm certified the lifts on the local ski area every year, and I was "advanced" by 7th grade on black diamond and double black diamond runs.

Front story, that was 3/4 of my life ago :ROFLMAO:

Maybe I will just do cross country skiing

As much as I enjoyed it, I will not likely take up skiing again. Bones take longer to heal after you cross the half century mark. My knees are good. I have known too many men who had knee replacement and although they needed it, they still walk like The Penguin. No thanks.

Allow me to mention I detest jogging. If you are 50+ and jogging you are increasing your chance of cardiac arrest exponentially. And beating up your joints. Especially if you push your limits. Walking and hiking burns almost the same number of calories.

Some of you may have heard about the Bongo fitness program? Walk at least 5 miles a day (not counting walking around the house), put the goddamn fork down, and limit all forms of sugar with extreme prejudice. You are never going to have a six pack again. If you ever had one. But you can have a flat belly and no man boobs.

Which is why I'm not walking 5 miles a day - 8 below right now and 24 below with wind chill.

I can handle being in the yard as it's only 2 acres.
F____ that! You would find me in front of the fireplace with the dogs. Call me when it's Spring and 60 degrees. :)
