Curious how you’re doing with your frame. Don’t expect the lower grid portion to look perfect. It’s not easy, I had a hard time especially thinking it’s not going to be to difficult….till attempting it. Kicked my butt.

What tools are you using ?

What techniques are working ?

Care to share photos? I shared my disaster (see links below) 🙂🫣

Here’s info I posted doing mine:

1st attempt- Building the new Bridge (76%) frame ?

2nd attempt- Building new bridge frame #2

Are you going to try to build a bridge frame again @Bongo Lewi
No plans to do that. Mine came out OK operationally, but I couldn't get past the ugly. I shot it a few times then took it apart and tossed the frame. I re-used the parts on another project. My interests lean more toward a 1911 project. I have a hobby-grade mill so I'm reasonably confident I can turn a metal blank into a decent 1911. Maybe this Spring. To keep it simple, I will likely go with a kit rather than sourcing parts from all over. At least for my first attempt.

I have friends in upscale suburban CARY, NC. It's an abbreviation for "Concentrated Area for Retired Yankees". Thousands of Maryland, Virginia, and DC expatriates who voted for high taxes and liberal politicians in their home state then ran south to get away from the train wrecks they created - to escape crime and lower their cost of living. Only to pollute NC politics with liberal d-bags like our Governor. The good news is the GOP have a supermajority in the State House. For now anyway.

The 'triangle' attracted a lot of high tech talent in the 1990s, who tended to be from someplace else and liberal. They are dug in now, centering on Raleigh-Durham. Like how Minneapolis-St Paul became North Somali.
Back in the late '60s and early '70s, lots of IBM employees from points north like the Binghamton, NY area were reassigned to IBM's Cary, NC site. While I know that lots from that area are quite conservative, Mrs. BeerHunter's childhood BFF's family was one of the families reassigned and half of that family are very conservative and the other half drank the Leftist Kool-Aid, including two of the sisters ostracizing their little sister (wife's BFF) and a couple of other members of the family that refused to swallow the Scamdemic "vaccination" BS!

Suffice it to say there is now at last one builder in Greater Raleigh-Durham who will complete a 76% slide.

I trust he will do it well. But it will be unavoidably ugly on the inside. Like wealthy Yankee liberals who invaded the Carolinas.

I was super careful with mine. I removed as much as I could with a small set of nippers like plastic modelers use to cut sprue. Then I cut the rest out with a Ryobi power chisel followed by a Ryobi rotary tool and several different burrs and sanding bits.

There was a lot of fitting back and forth to get the rails positioned properly. That didnt bother me so much. I just hated the look of it even though the gun ran just fine after I finished it. I'm very particular and it looked half assed to me. Also, part of me just didn't trust the integrity of the frame. It's really easy to take off too much material and I cannot bring myself to JB Weld a gun. I'd throw the frame in the shit can before I'd do that. I make no judgement or criticism of others who have. Just saying I will not go there. Anything not finished perfectly, not square, out of round or otherwise wrong I see immediately and cannot ignore. My OCD will not allow it.

The guy that built my house wanted to kill me. During construction I checked every wall, floor, ceilings, and the framing with a tape measure and six foot level. I made him fix things that were off by a 1/4 inch. I told him up front that was how it was going to be.

Was the same when I had my last house [in the DPRofMD] built, but I missed a couple of spots that bugged the livin' shit out of me the entire 15 years I owned that house!

Your a pro! Nice work. If I got one, I'd probably look to cheat and take it to a laser cutter/engraver of some sort haha...probably.

I’d do more of them if I could get some for cheap. I’m pretty sure I could eventually figure out an efficient way to clean out that grid.

A month or two back a vendor had them in the $30-40 range. I should have bought some at that time. But, I don't think they had the Compact version which is what I was looking for. Is that price range what you had in mind?

I have ported engines, so if I got a stash of bits for this, I think I might be able to do it. To port engines, you need to be very patient and tedious in your approach. I think that's what this will take should anyone try it out.

Honestly Michele, you've got the rails in and it's looking probably as good as can be already.

If you wanted to touch up the bottom internally more, I think you'd need to make a new type of dremel bit. I personally cut a piece of metal hanger to about 3 inches or so in length, the type of hanger that would fit like any other dremel bit into a dremel, and wrapped and superglued 600 to 1000 grit sandpaper onto it in order to finish my channel.

May be comparable to that sander you used?

We definitely also need someone to measure the diameter of the third pin hole on the fullsize and compact frames. Measured for length, from top of frame to location of trigger pin, and back down to location of the third pin hole.

I'm thinking of getting a full-size personally, but I just don't know if I'd have a use for it.

Hey man I finished my first one and currently on my second one. Listen get a pack of coping saw blades. Hammer put the little tab on one side and put the saw blade in the frame. Be sure to tape up the sides because it’s easy to Nick up the sides . You can then put the little metal tab back inside and use the coping saw to remove the whole middle section all the way down the “throat” from there take a 1/4 chisel and you can clean up the sides then take the dremmel and clean it up. My first one didn’t look bad at all. I mean once the trigger housing and all that is in you can’t even see anything anyway. The current G17 I’m working is going to turn out a lot better, I’m trying to make it look just like a normal 80% frame. These pics are from the first build, also taken before using the dremmel and cleaning everything up. When I get home later I’ll upload pictures of my current build which looks a lot better. Hope this helps. 👍

Oh forgot in the last post. Definitely worth buying rook rails for the 76 frame. The real rails they give you are a lot harder to get in.

@Goodheadache not too shabby. 👍🏻 That frame is definitely a challenge. I like your coping saw method. The p80 rails can be press fit by heating it up a tad. It’ll push right in place.
Might have to do that for the last 1/16 of an inch or so that I have left. This is my second build attempt. Worked on it last night and cleaned it up a little. I definitely see how people are really anal about their guns would not want one of these frames. Yeah you won’t be able to see most of the spots that look bad but I still know they are there. Plan on building an Ar-15 after I finish this G17 bridge frame so that should be a breeze compared to this

That one is much nicer, the more ya do the better ya get. Learning cure is pretty deep. Cant do much about the roughness in there unless you spend hours hand sanding with miniature tools. Very nice !
