Looking at this carbine when they are on sale... discounted 400 bucks ... reminds me of sitting at a bar all night, it's closing time and your only hope is that freaky looking girl at the end of the bar. I'd find myself on the horns of a dilemma.

Do I really want it?
What if I go for it and decide I like it?
If I dont like it would I ever be able to get rid of it?

I can count the number of times I have seen one at a range on two fingers. Yet, there's always been something about this gun that calls to me.

It's really cool in it's true form i.e. short barrel and full auto. It just doesn't (IMO) translate well into a non-NFA rifle. I'd rather get a (now impossible to find) AR Five Seven.

I've never seen one at the range. But I've wanted one for years. One of these days, I'll get the rifle to go with the mags that I already have!

It will go nicely with my FNH Five-seveN pistol.

And it will compliment my other FNH bullpup (FS2000)

I've never had a bullpup, but I've been wanting a Steyr AUG for a long time.

Bullpups are cool.... the form factor of an SBR without the bullshit NFA bullshit.

ETA: I just noticed I said bullshit twice! LOL!

In my experience, the freak will undress, have a smokin' bod, be a hungry nymph, and be gone in the morning. Just be sure to hide your wallet before you pass out... :D How this translates to a firearm I can't figure out, though...

Being a sub gun fanatic, I could see this wacky looking gun being impressive in full auto. The 5.7 caliber in an automatic weapon intrigues me.

There's nothing more satisfying as slapping a full auto MP5 and emptying a mag in half a wink. Aiming is optional. Just point and fill the air with lead. Although the sights are credible and you can shoot it like a pistol. I never truly appreciated how effective this is until I found myself needing to do that. I can testify that I'd never want to be on the wrong end of one with no cover. Example:

This alien-looking FN gives me the impression of being more aimable, precise than a sub gun. But smaller and allowing for agility like a pistol. Being mainly a defensive pistol shooter, I think this is what appeals to me.

Just don't get any of the common petroleum based gun lubes near the polycarbonate magazines.
Ballistol is fine, but most of the others will cause the plastic to fail pretty quick.

Have a guy on the NFA forum that bought a CZ Skorpion and found this out. Pics if you want them.
Maybe FN uses a different/better plastic, but you won't know until the mag either cracks and comes apart or not.

I have never seen anything like that mentioned about the FN mags.... not even on the FN forum.

That's a new one on me as well. I have owned a Scorpion for a long time. I normally wouldn't apply solvents to a magazine anyway, but it's good to know.

I have a bunch of ETS 30 round sticks that are Glock compatible. The transparent colored and clear type. Some people piss and moan about them but I've had no issues at all. A casual range buddy of mine has the Mossberg pistol. It came with ETS-like clear mags, which I believe are polycarbonate. Like most Mossy's, that gun runs like a champ. He loves it. No problems with the mags or cleaners that I know of but I'll ask him next time we run into each other.

There are a lot of plastic parts on PCCs these days. I haven't seen a warnings from the mfrs.

Most of the cleaners I use now are water based vs. petroleum solvents. Lubes... as I have mentioned it's Mobile 1 oil and grease for me. I haven't noticed any effect on plastics with Mobil.

Experiment with Ballistol and Mil-Tec lubes to simulate lube from the weapon contacting the feed lips.
All mags are new.

Left:
Control group. No lube.

Center: Balistol

Right: Mil-Tec

Load all the mags.

24 hours later:

Readers Digest version:

Mil-Tec attacked the polycarbonate mags and caused them to crack to the point of failure. Ballistol did not.

At 48 hours the second mag came apart with the third ready to let go anytime.

So, is this just a thing with Mil-Tec? Dunno. Just throwing this out there for folks with clear plastics to be aware of.

I would love to get rid of this thing. My governor is pushing to reduce the number of felonies committed with NFA firearms from 0/year to several 10s of thousands per year for every NFA item found in her state. I would gladly trade this thing for an SP5.

Interesting. MILTEC-1 seems to go out of their way to say it is made for metal. It is a synthetic, which makes this even more interesting. The culprit is most likely one of the additives MILTEC-1 uses.

To wit:

Polycarbonate is considered to be compatible with many mineral acids, alcohol, mild soaps, petroleum oils (but not some oil additives), silicone oils & greases, and low concentrations of alkalis. However, most aromatic and halogenated solvents like toluene, benzene, gasoline, and acetone, will cause, at a minimum, surface whitening and, likely, crystallization of the material. Therefore, contact between polycarbonate and these solvents should be avoided. The same is true for solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone and hydrochloric acid, whose use can lead to stress cracking.

Ballistol is mineral oil with additives. Mineral oil is a liquid paraffin. Made from ... you guessed it... crude oil. The product has alcohol additives and an oleate, which is essentially a soap. I agree it does work well. Not just on guns. Smells weird though. :)

NOTE: Synthetic lubricants are most often synthesized from chemicals extracted from crude oil. I spent some time in refineries during my engineering days. It's really quite fascinating ... all the things that come from crude oil.

I've said before the HK is on the list of greatest firearms of all times.

The short barrel makes the FN even more of an oddity!
