Sequels are never as good no matter what the subject. Except once in a while.
I rented an S&W Bodyguard 2.0 and put a box-o-ammo thru it today. Wow. What an improvement.
I had heard it was much better than the original but not really seen one firsthand. I used to routinely carry the original Bodyguard as a backup. Sometimes in a pocket holster, sometimes in an ankle rig. It was more than adequate for that purpose and you couldn't beat it in terms or weight and size. A heavy trigger is a necessary evil in a pocket/backup pistol but 10-12 pounds was a bit much. I didnt really care all that much because the only way I was going to put a round thru that gun was if I were in serious trouble and the bad guy was close enough for me to smell his breath.
This new Bodyguard looks and feels like a shrunken Shield. The grip is greatly improved over the original and fits the hand well. I have average sized hands and can almost get my whole pinky wrapped around the grip when using the extended mag, which holds 12 rounds. It also comes with a flush mag. Racking the slide also requires less effort. Presumably, S&W engineers borrowed some of the secrets they used to make the Shield 380 rack so easily. My guess is the trigger is around 6 lbs. Not bad.
First mag... I basically pointed at the target and let 'er rip. 12 shots as fast as I could pull the trigger. They all made it on the paper. About a ten inch spread. I'll take that any day of the week. The second mag I took my time and put in a little effort to tighten up my group. Not bad. Most within a six inch spread. The sights are decent. The front is Tritium.
The model I shot has a safety. It's a small lever and I could imagine someone fumbling with flicking it off under duress. But it moved effortlessly and wasnt too tight like its predecessor. The lever should be just a little bit bigger in my opinion.
The only small gun I like better than this for concealment is the Beretta Pico, also a 380, but no longer made. So small and thin you could hide it in a Speedo.
Anybody that wants a small, lightweight backup or a pistol they can pocket or carry in the vest of their tuxedo, this Bodyguard 2.0 is the cats ass. S&W has outdone themselves with improving on the original. I'm going to buy one after the holidays.
