Same discussions on engine & performance forums, people “building” while they’re really “assembling”.
Slapping a punisher sticker on yer gun is NOT customizing.
Frankly what 90% do here is assembling, doesn’t mean it can’t be difficult but if you’re putting off the shelf parts together it’s not building.
Anyway, couple of builder videos:

The 1st guy has obviously had some sort of engineering education, pretty impressive. Didn't watch the other 2

I've heard that argument before... that P80 builders are really just "assembling." It's funny because those same people have never made that argument against those who "build" AR-15s starting with a finished (100%) serialized frame. They call them "AR-15 builds," not "AR-15 assemblies."

Even on "ARFcom" (dedicated AR-15 forum), they call them "builds," even when made with 100% finished and serialized frames.

Most car builders don't forge, cast, or machine their own engine blocks... or the pistons... or the cams. They buy the parts and BUILD a car. Technically they're "assemblers," but they don't say, "I assembled my own hot rod."

When the first engine done blowed up in my Subaru STI, I had a local speed shop install a new "built" engine. They bought all the parts and created a new engine. And then I paid them. :) In the car world, it was a "Built Engine" vs a factory-made engine.

Clearly, this particular argument against the P80 community is intended to be derogatory and dismissive. And to that, I simply shrug my shoulders and go back to building. 🤪

Similarly, when I was doing the car track thing, to a layperson it's "racing." Technically, it wasn't racing. It was actually called "High Performance Driver Education" (HPDE). It wasn't actually racing because there was no timing or ranking of finishes. It was just driving on the track really fast. But it wasn't competitive, and therefore not "racing."

But if I'm talking to Joe Schmoe about what I did with my car at triple-digit speeds on the track last weekend... If I say "HPDE," he won't know what the fuck I'm talking about. Even if I explain the differences between HPDE and actual racing, he will interpret it all as just "racing." It's cars going fast on a track. It's all "racing."

I must say that finishing a Poly80 pistol or even routing a lower is 4th grade skill level. It's pretty much what created the whole 👻gun thing where every criminal and 14 year old has one. It used to take skill and equipment to home produce a firearm. I'm a Sheet Metal Journeyman and it took me a few years to produce what I considered a decent AK receiver before all the jigs and Internet were available. Several of my friends pretty much only buy barrel blanks even though one of my friends has built a rifling cutter. My friend even made the wheels on this.

This post is 2nd guessing my choice of few "friends" I have left

Does you friends need more friends? Asking for... well it's just me

We have a pretty decent builder community in Southern Maryland. I tend to help with welding related things.

Sure it’s building. When GM puts together a car from bins of parts, that’s building a car.

There is a difference between DESIGNING & SPEC, and building/assembling.

Just like the builder of a home or another structure. The architect charts the design and specs. I worked for a construction company. We built, demolished, remodeled. Just because we sourced our parts and materials elsewhere doesn’t mean we didn’t build it.

Same here, I only watched the first video, but was impressed.
