My initial job title was special agent but I was a sworn officer. Go figure.
In the movies, you often see dialogs where a supervisor refers to a subordinate as 'agent so-and-so'. Never happens. Nor do they salute or refer to senior personnel as 'sir'. Unless they are a Director. A Director is kind of like a Colonel in the Marine Corps. They sit at the right hand of God. And they remind you of that frequently.
The exception? FBI, Secret Service, and ATF. Staff are generally called agents and there's a somewhat military-like protocol. Example: "I think you should stand a little closer to that razor, Agent Schmuckelstein". "Yes sir, Director Higginbottom".
Foreign Service (CIA and State department) is not law enforcement.
