What did we THINK was going to happen by admitting non-citizens from ENEMY countries into our military??
Sentenced for ONLY 16 years??? No death penalty for espionage and treason?
A federal judge in San Diego, Calif., handed down the 200-month – or 16-year, eight-months – prison sentence to former Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Jinchao “Patrick” Wei, 25, who was convicted in August of espionage and conspiracy to commit espionage, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California.
Over an 18-month period, Wei gave a Chinese military intelligence officer dozens of sensitive manuals, technical reports and photographs of Navy surface ships. In return, Wei collected over $12,000 for his actions, which he told a friend likely was “espionage.”
Wei, who was born in China, came to the United States with his mother in 2016 and enlisted in the Navy in July 2021.
Prosecutors alleged that Wei, who had a secret-level security clearance, first encountered the Chinese officer on social media in February 2022. Their relationship developed through encrypted messaging apps, and a month later, Wei began sending the Chinese officer photographs and information about U.S. Navy ships and military exercises, prosecutors said.
