I got hit by a drunkdriver awhile back. I can no longer pull my bow back and the concussive wave from firearms is too much most days. Not allowed to drive yet either--Soooooo
Some buddies got me a Crossbow, picked me up drove me out to a spot they set up. Blind and a comfortable chair. Set me out with a cocked crossbow 3days now AND NOT 1 DEER. NOT ONE. What the hell??? Sign everywhere, tree rubs, scrapes all over and not 1 in sight.
Come to think about it we havent been seeing them on the side of the road either in the morning. Normally they are a FREAKING PLAGUE around here.

Anyone have any luck this year yet?

That's why they call it hunting. Haha, sorry. I've spent endless hours staring at empty woods as well. I'm afraid I've pretty much lost interest in it at this point. Good luck! And hopefully you continue to heal. I was in a head-on right at the start of all the COVID BS. Luckily, just bruised ribs from the shoulder belt, but damn, it was a good three months before I was back to normal.

I tagged a 7 point the other day with a crossbow.

But them friends of yours... those are real friends. Hang on to them!

Have you tried blind calling? A fawn bleat generally works for me this time of year for does.

Unbelievable!!!!!! Shot checked at 35yds, solid hit broadside behind shoulder- 3 blade fixed broadhead. Carried 40yds laterally before dropping arrow. Semi-Circular search grid expanding every 6 feet for 2.5hrs. Dogs called out- searched for over 4hrs and approximately 100acres.
Arrow had meat, fat, hair and covered in blood.
Not 1 DROP of blood found other then on arrow. NOT ONE DROP.
Dogs tracked my search grid and to where arrow fell. Then nothing.

Until proven otherwise it was a 250lb 18 point buck, with 6 - 10inch drop tines and 4inch K9s.
And the legend of Badass Buckey the flesh eating swamp monster lives on.

Happened to me a few weeks ago. Shoulder hits don't bleed much at all. In fact, I've never had a high shoulder hit that I've been able to recover. Admittedly I haven't had that many.
Meat and blood on the arrow. Searched the woods for a couple hours. ZERO blood. Ended up walking away to let her be recycled. Lost 2 nights sleep over it the last time.

Ive had a couple I never recovered, but this is the 1st 1 shot that close I didnt find.
Only up side was the dogs couldn't find a trace either. So dont feel too awful bad. Buddy checked camera's yesterday. Had a big doe with spot in the breast plate/brisket area. From all the collagen on the arrow. Guessing thats were it hit.
Guessing my eyes are still a little crossed lol.

My Heads ringing 1 eye a little blurry but hes down. 87yds full frontal shot 16"

6.5 grendel 130gr sst. No entry wound No exit wound. Not 1 drop of blood anywhere. When we opened him up, chest cavity was full of blood. Didnt find bullet, wasnt looking too hard.
All 4 legs buckled and fell dead where shot. Almost perfect heart shot.

Cool! I went to an AR platform 300 BLKOUT a couple of years ago because of felt recoil. Too many years playing around of tanks for doing much shooting with big bore. Anyway took an 11 point 2 years ago.

But that should have been my grand daughters fist deer. She said she had to use the bathroom and walked back to the house. While she was gone that suicidal SOB walked out of the woods and stopped broad side about 35 yards in front of me....Couldn't let it walk away.

Rick

Lmao awesome- I would of done the same.
I asked the Game Warden if I thought it was doe when I shot, if it still counts a doe after the shot.
He just looked at me for minute, then asked my name and county. ROFLMAO

We moved crap around in the house a little to to make things easier for me and I just got both the 3D and resin printers set back up!

I was legal. Don't have to have special permits here anymore. The way DNR (do nothing right) is here I don't go into the woods with a firearm without a license.

A young man that just aged out of my youth group asked me to teach him how to hunt this year. Took him out a couple times and he made it happen last night for the first time. Little doe and the shot could have been better, but I've never seen him happier. It's the start of a long road for him and I'm proud to pass down the knowledge. Last night he learned how to gut, skin, and quarter. This week he'll learn how to butcher and process for the freezer. Lord willing, he'll be able to pass it down to the next generation.
