I am interested in making a grip for an SCT 17 that has more of a palm swell. The Hogue Glock grip is great on a G17 but the SCT 17 has a wider mag well (about 2.5 inches) that is too wide to fit a Hogue on. If I can make the entire grip larger and then custom cut a rubber palm swell and glue that on, it should give me the palm swell where I want it. Any experience with using shrink wrap as a pistol grip?

You may want to trying boiling the Hogue to get it soft and stretchy enough to fit over the SCT grip. May or may not work but it is worth the try. You’ll have to work quickly so it doesn’t cool while you are fitting. If they make one for the G20, that may be an even better place to start. Edit, I see they list the same one for the 17 as the 20.

I understand your point. I'm concerned that any Hogue that can fit over the mag well of a G17 will be too loose to fit the rest of the grip. That's why I've been looking at shrink wrap, like is used for electrical wiring. I'm thinking of this one: Amazon.com

Just $20 to lose if it doesn't work. :) Do it, document it, and share!

If it doesn't work, cut it off. :)

It won't be too loose. Heat shrink tubing will be slick so you will have to deal with that.

You can buy one of these on ebay for under $10.
It will stretch to fit anything - it's not hard rubber like the Hogue one.

I had a Hogue "knock-off" that TEMU allowed me to select as a "free" gift. I think it was worth about $3 otherwise. I put it on a Dagger Fullsize-S frame (19x) to make it less slippery. But it made for a really fat grip and why I named it "Wide Load". :) I find the Dagger texture to be akin to holding a wet eel once my palms get sweaty on a hot FL afternoon. That is an older pic of when I first got the frame--the grip is off now...

Grip girdles - girdles in any form - are a turn off for me. :)

On the subject of large shrink wrap... Shrink tubing that size is often lined on the inside with a sealant/adhesive. Once heated (and shrunk) it aint coming off. This is used a lot in marine cabling applications where the electrical connections need to be waterproof. Read the specs and proceed with caution before putting on your gun. It also needs a fair amount of heat to shrink properly. I dont believe hair dryer heat you can use with smaller heat shrink tubing is going to work.

Long story I wont get into, but many moons ago I found myself working making modifications to a 'fish return' system in a power plant. The cooling water intake was sucking in crabs and fish. The original system installed to prevent this wasnt working as designed. Anyway... we corrected it and to protect the electrical connections from water and corrosion we used that stuff.

While trying to figure this problem out, my co-workers and I ate a lot of blue crabs for lunch. :)

Yes, the shrink tubing I am considering is exactly as you describe. It has an adhesive that is not coming off once it is heated. What I really want is a Hogue grip because that fits my hand perfectly. But a Hogue won't go on over an SCT magwell. So the other choice is to cut the Hogue vertically, wrap it around the SCT grip and glue it in place. In that case also, the Hogue is not coming off again unless I can devise a way to glue it to itself and not to the SCT grip.

Got it. Have you tried getting it really hot before trying to get to past that mag well? Boiling water. Hot synth rubber will stretch quite a bit and usually retain its shape after cooling. The issue is it can be hard to handle at that temp and you risk tearing it.

You may wonder how I know this but if you acquire a speculum tool, you should be able to heat that Hogue rubber and stretch it over that mag well. Ask your GF or wife how it works. :)
