1st impressions to this unit is HOLLY SHIT FREAKING AWESOME!!!!!!
Picked up feom MidwayUSA for $799.00 with a 10% discount-so $720. Midway rocks- received in under 4days from clicked to order.
Overall the unit appears well made , plus well thought out in design and function.
Things to keep in mind-
• its a Electronic scope- aka camera. You are looking at a micro TV screen. NOT A GLASS LENSED SCOPE.
• This is the lastest in COMMERCIAL modestly priced Night Vision. NOT A $10K UNIT SOLD TO THE MILITARY FOR $30K.
• The rest of the world isnt a video game, so this anit siphon filter or Call of Duty.
Cons- instructions are a joke. Like they had a high school contest to get it done in 500 words or less.
There are online manuals and tutorials, but for $700+ I expected a BOOK.
The mount only has 1 point of friction, it may not be a issue. But I prefer 2 points especially on something of this weight and x100 because its a electronic scope.
Pros- HOLLY CRAP!!!!! THIS IS AWESOME!!!!
I havent even bothered with the instruction "Flyer".
I found the 5 button controls to very intuitive and easy to manipulate. I do have biggish hands/fingers. So I do have some issue hitting the buttons correctly some times.
Screen menus are well laid out and easy to maneuver. I had zero issues picking up the unit, putting batteries in it and figuring out how to make it work.
I would of like to be able to veiw reticle choice prior to exit, but thats a small thing. Just would be nice.
The menus are a breeze and being a Doctor Who fan found that philosophy to work quite well - when in doubt, press a button. You only have 5. In under 5 minutes I had day time screen adjusted to my preference. Which was lowest possible settings. Found a reticle I liked in a color that didnt give me a stroke. Again menus were a breeze. Simple and effective.
Adjustments on screen viewer aka eye peice were easy ish. Not loose but very manageable, both front and rear. The forward focus was equally easy, especially with the ringed lever on it.
Optic zoom- again everything was intuitive.
I took unit out in daylight and I am really amazed. Using as a monocular, was able to preform all functions 1 handed- big hands- big feet- make good clowns.
Quality of picture ( and it is a picture) was excellent. Zoom/focus was simple and very crisp. Able to recognize shapes, figures etc 1000yds at full zoom. I couldn't read a car tag, but more then able to see whats needed.
Didnt play with contrast/brightness after setting too much.
After dark I could pick out my dog running the yard and leaves on trees/bushes at over 30yards withOUT the external Illuminator. My yard is very dark, with nekked eye I can a bush at 30yds, but couldnt tell if someone is kneeling infront of it. With ambient light I could see leaves.
With the illuminator I CAN SEE EVERYTHING. This well need futher fiddling. In the total dark I could make out and read labels of objects in my shop at 30feet without issue.
No notable drop in battery indicator after 1hr + of playing.
Mounting on rifle as a clip on is totally possible. They have a monocular that doesnt have reticles that would work beautifully I would imagine.
Being Im still not cleared to drive or do anything fun, plus my head aching from last nights fun- side note shoot through windows are bullshit JS.
I really didnt suffer much eye strain at 10min of continuous use of scope. Atleast my head didnt hurt anymore then usual. I was able to turn down picture to acceptable levels and maintain clarity of picture.
More to come when I sight it in and use in the woods. I will be checking for change of POI with pictured set ups etc.
