You were in San Diego ??

Yep. Naval Station (32nd Street) for my first year. Then USS Independence CV-62, homeported at North Island, for my 2nd and 3rd year. Though we weren't in port much. In 1990, we were at home only 90 days total. Most of the time we were "haze gray and underway," baby!

these look like Gulfwar 1 gifts
Yep. But, they were never dropped. We were the first response to the invasion of Kuwait (August 3, 1990) - arriving 5 days after the Iraqis invaded. Literally the first ones there. So, the coalition (and our own forces) had not been assembled, yet. That took several more months.

General Norman Schwarzkopf came aboard to establish a point of command if needed early in the situation.

Stormin' Norman arriving. He was like a rock star!

I was on the front row for his speech on the hangar deck:

We were on station for 118 days (but who's counting?). Some more pics:

The hospital ship USNS Comfort joined us.

Was thinking I could have posted this in the Military section. But, it started as being about aviation photography.

My, my we are/were neighbors. Same time I was aboard my home USS Cape Cod AD 43. I cross decked to her from Fat Sammy Gompers AD 37 to do back to back West Pacs in 83. Lived on my beloved Cod for a total of 10 yrs. I loved that ship.

I was at NavSta from '88 - '89. Then the Indy '89 - '91.

My last six weeks on the Indy (and the Navy) were in Yokosuka, which was its new homeport.

Ah I was at SupShip SD 87-88 my 2 yr shore stink. 1 of 2 enlisted to ever get to be stationed there. Got to wear civi’s working the ship yards making sure the yard birds fixed our ships according to specs. I was a structural surveyor, spec writer and all around real PITA for contractors. 😁
Great fun, really enjoyed this. I got to go on small boys shake down cruise before females were allowed on em. As a PO1 was enthralled to get the OX stateroom rack. 😆

I was on the Ranger (CV-61) on the 1980-81 cruise, and we had "I ran to Iran" t-shirts for people who completed a certain amount of miles jogging on the flight deck. We also had home made posters with the Ayatollah's face, and a target, with the caption "Blow a hola in the Ayatolla" We were in the persian gulf with birds loaded and in the air when the announcement came on the A-1C that the hostages had landed in Germany.
