So, in the Southern part of the county, and across into the next county there is a colony of white squirrels. Most folks think they are only in Brevard, NC, but somehow, a few ended up here and call it home now.

Ten years ago, one of my High Power buds and me were hunting a WMA tract and I bagged this one. Up until that point, it was the only one I'd ever seen, and I haven't seen another during hunting season with a rifle in my hands.

Another High Power bud we both have known for decades said he wanted a crack at Whitey if we ever see another one. So, he has come up to hunt with us numerous times and he did get one in his sights one time, but no kill.
So today I get a pic from my bud Tom that another one has appeared and if the Lord is willing and the river don't rise, we'll get Charlie another crack at Son of Whitey, as this is obviously a youngster. That is if a hawk or coyote doesn't get him before the season starts.

I understand they have black squirrels in Michigan. Be cool to have a set. Kinda like the squirrel version of Mad magazines "Spy vs. Spy".

My sister was a hs teacher in IL. There was a town near where she lived that had white squirrels.

Yeah, there's about 6 places around the country that lay claim to "White Squirrel Capital of the US", and several more that just have white squirrels, but don't try to commercialize the fact.

I remember driving thru there and seeing “Home of the white squirrel” signs. I looked up the town. It is Olney IL.

Now and then I’ll see a black squirrel in my nick of the woods. Mostly reds and grays.

I inherited some land further east that has some wetlands and I see nutrias there all the time. Invasive species. I let squirrels live and shoot nutria on sight.

While working as a CATV contractor back in the late 80’s I saw black squirrels in Alexandria, IN and white ones in Marionville, MO. Always wondered what the offspring would look like if you crossed them.

It is apparently a gene mutation that causes both the white and the black coloring. Not sure if crossing them would produce a different variant. They are both genetically gray squirrels.
