I assumed Springfield would retire the XD when the Echelon gained popularity. That has not been the case. In terms of dependability and features, it's tough find a better striker gun than the XD. SA just released Mod 3 of the XD. So I guess it's not going away any time soon.
I've been an XD fan for a long time, going back to the first gen. Every new release of the XD has improved on the former model. While I thought the 'grip zone' branding was a bit silly, the design was good.
There are a lot of great handguns in market right now so I am reluctant to pronounce which I think is better than the other. They are all good. I will say that SA seems to do a better job than some others at providing all the features you would want at a very attractive price. The mags are high quality and regularly on sale.
I should add that in my opinion the XD in 10mm has no rival in striker land. I like my G20 and the Sig is a bit smaller and lighter, but the XD 10mm is a workhorse. Balanced, reliable and comfortable to shoot.
