My first Sub2000 was a used 40 cal and I shot it so much that I used it up. It was time for the crusher. However, a little bird told me that if you ask, Kel-Tec will exchange a worn out or broken Sub 2000 for a new model for $150. I couldn't find that offer anywhere on their web site, so I called. Sure enough it was true.

I sent in my train wreck and paid the fee plus shipping and two week later a brand new 9mm Gen 2 Sub 2000 was on my front porch. This is it.

As some may notice, there are some extra bonus parts. The gun has been fully MCarbo-nated inside and out.

It fits in a small sling bag. This one takes Glock mags. But that's easy to change if your companion pistol to this bugout gun is another brand. The proboscis on the muzzle is not a can. It's a Kaw Valley modular comp. The optic is Vortex, mounted by an MCarbo flipper.

Did you do it yourself? Or send it to them?

I haven't been able to find an optic mount that meets my preferences. The problem with the M-Carbo transformer doohickey is that it adds considerably to the width of the folded gun. Me no likey. Everything else prevents folding the gun completely. So no optic for mine, yet.

I did it. Bought all the parts and installed everything at the same time. I didn't want to open it up again. The MCarbo videos are pretty good. There are some quirky steps you have to go thru when tearing it down and reassembling.

The new Gen 3, the handguard rotates. Similar to the Red Lion aftermarket handguard. Those Red Lion upgrades are really well made. Small shop. One guy and he makes all of it.

I found nothing better for mounting the optic. So I went with MCarbo. It still fits in a sling bag, so the extra width doesn't bug me.

I'm trying to remember the issue I have with the rotating handguard. I looked into it, but there was a reason it wouldn't work for me. I'm blanking out right now, though.

I love the compactness of my S2K without adding width to it.

But the iron sights suuuuuuuuuck.

Yes. I replaced mine with the MCarbo but they are only marginally better. It's basically a survival carbine. Put a 30 round stick in it and keep shooting. Kind of like a subgun. Point it in the right direction and fill the air with lead. Still, you can shoot this gun fairly well with the peep sight at 50 yards. Put an optic on it, a bit longer shot. 75, 100 yards, no problemo. Last time I took mine out I was shooting soda bottles and plates Hickok45 style at 50 yards. Soft shooting, reasonably accurate.

Yeah... at least for now, I've decided to keep it with iron sights. Like you said... it's really a <50 yard gun. And it's really a bit of a novelty, much like the Shockwave. Though the SW is arguably a worthy home defense piece.

I consider the Shockwave the best all-around home defense weapon. I have one but prefer the Remington V3 Tac13 because it’s semi auto. I have a 20 ga shockwave for my wife.

The shotgun is infallible for home defense. Nobody takes a round from a 12 gauge and keeps charging.

That’s a pretty reasonable price. You get the new rotating foregrip too.

As I sort of mention in the op, I put 10k rounds thru my first one and I bought it used. So probably 15-20k rounds total? That's a full life for a Kel-Tec.

Yet another Sub 2000 ready for when you have to 23 Skidoo ... grab and go. This one takes Beretta mags and is accompanied by a Girsan Regard MC, which is an excellent Beretta 92 clone. Not as pretty as my 92X but it runs great.

I fixed the pistol and the Sub2000 to hard Molle panels. The Kel-Tec is held in place with a Quick Fist Grip. I can lift the entire rig out of the bag. The pistol is captured in a retention holster that's attached to a hard Molle backing riveted to the bag. It can't fall out if the sling bag is unzipped, which you may want to do while carrying so you can quickly access the gun.

This kit is well traveled. I've carried it when there was a need to be discreet but something more than a handgun might be required. I have a similar, more serious rig put together pretty much the same way with a Sig Rattler in .223 and an M18. No mag/ammo compatibility with that one.

Full disclosure: There are a lot of non-OEM parts in this kit, which could upset some people. But it has been drop tested many times.

Here's a link to Red Lion. This guy's upgrades for various Kel-Tec guns are high quality. He's also responsive and answers questions if you call or email. https://www.redlionprecision.com/

I remember now why I didn't like the new version of the S2K.... the rotating handguard turns only 90 degrees. So the optic will be on the side, which makes the folded "package" wider just like the MCarbo folding optic mount. That's a no-go for me. Not really for any practical reason, but rather esthetic.

If it rotated 180 degrees, THEN we'd have something.

A takedown like the TNW or Ruger PCC might be a better choice for you. Ruger has better upgrade options. The TNW is a bare bones basic takedown. But it's super rugged. More of a survival rifle. I have one with the 45 and 10mm barrels. They are a small shop in OR. Zero aftermarket though. You have to love it for what it is.

Well, my wife bought the Sub2K for me as a surprise. I like that it takes Glock mags, which I have plenty of. I'm not looking to jump ship. If I'm spending more money, it will be on something else... not another folding carbine. But I'm curious... which kind of mags does the Ruger take? And who is "TNW?"

I met the owner of TNW thru an acquaintance. Tim Bero is a smart dude. Mechanical engineer. He has a lot of expertise in machine guns.

Ah, so it's not folding. It's a break-down model. Yeah... not interested.
The Ruger is a bayonet-type, the TNW is a simple threaded.

You might be excited by this. Pivot - Trailblazer Firearms. I have read about this oddball carbine but not fondled or shot it.
