While very few of us are pilots, it occurs to me that many (most?) of us hold some fascination with aviation. And I know we have at least one pilot here (@BeerHunter). So why not have a thread dedicated to interesting aviation videos, news, developments, hobbies, events?

Looks like a bird strike actually....

A second later, you can see smoke from one engine:

Watch this video (the one on the right) in slo-mo:

Quick application of full power, maybe after burners before they are full up to power.

Modern engines are much better about smoke than early jet engines but are still able to roll some coal in the right conditions.

I showed this to some F-18 pilots and asked if it was brilliant flying or huge screw up. Both was the answer. And, the pilot was within an RCH of the envelope before something bad was going to happen. Maverick would not be able to get closer to the edge.

Idiots in Washington (state) are protesting a Blue Angels show. The show goes on!
When I was young we lived in Brunswick, ME--my dad worked at the NAS there. Various Navy jets would routinely fly mere 100s of feet over our house. And they weren't the weenie "quiet" turbines like they have now... :D

Anyone catch any of the C-Span broadcast of the NTSB hearing? The one where the Blackhawk crashed into the passenger plane outside DCA? I've caught bits and pieces here and there. It is safe to say we can blame it on Nobama... :devilish:

I've always wondered why aviation controls need so much dramatic input for small corrections.
The smile on his face after touch down is priceless! :D I suppose that is a common reaction with pilots? ;)

Normally, there is no need to move the controls like that. I'm guessing gusting winds. Winds are reported in steady winds with gust to xx. 15 knots gust to 30 kts for example. That said, I've seen pilots move the controls like that in steady winds and for no reason I could see. Some can move them like that and the plane stays steady. Some do it and make it like a carnival ride.

you don't row a plane do ya? lol must have been some challenging crosswinds.

I hitched rides in C5's every now and then. Mostly in/out of Dover. I was always in awe something that big and heavy can actually fly. Especially when loaded with armor!

Yeah... the C5 is amazing... and HUGE. The tail is 65 feet tall! I watched one take off at Subic Bay:

There's an 'upper deck' in some of them that kind of resembles a no frills airliner. I dont know if they all have that but in addition to the cargo it can haul a lot of personnel too. I'd guess about 50 or so. A smaller space with cots too. And crappers!

I would try to get on military transport any time I could. I found the flight more comfortable than commercial airliners. Uncle Sam doesn't pay for first class on commercial unless you are a Big Mahoff. C130s didn't have a the same creature comforts and were noisier. But the hops were usually shorter. Even so, it beat the hassle of airports and sitting in coach with the cattle. Especially in Europe. The carriers jam passengers in even tighter than in the US.
