New Blog Article! An open letter to fellow Patriots: Build another gun! Now!

This is in regards to people carrying pistols in the woods for protection, which you yourself admitted that guides do right after you said it was dumb.
Thanks for your input, but I'll take the word of a hunter who has killed thousands of big game to include brown bears.
Again, this conversation revolves around using hardcast.
I hunted big game most of my adult life. In some very inhospitable locations where humans rarely tread.

You evidently misinterpreted my post. If you want to compare notes on how many backwoods hunting guides and bush pilots I actually know, I'm happy to do that.

For the sake of clarity, I'll summarize for you.

1. Bear hunting with a pistol is stupid. Nobody with the common sense of a horse does this. Can you kill a bear while hunting with a pistol? Sure. Can the bear kill you? More likely.

2. Hunting, hiking or camping where there are bears require a capable big bore handgun for bear defense. See previous post.

3. Any 45 ACP caliber pistol is unsuitable for hunting or defense from bears. +P buys you no significant advantage. 10% increase in velocity won't save you. Sorry to disappoint. And I'm wondering how many Google searches will reveal stories of guys who killed bears with their .22LR. I'm sure they are out there. So are stories about human head transplants.

Recently, there was a story someone published here about two former Special Ops men (or SEALs.. I cant recall which) who crossed paths a with grizzly bear. The bear attacked and both men dumped an entire mag into the animal before it dropped - almost at their feet. Glock 20 as I recall. BTW: 10mm has a much higher velocity than 45 ACP +P. I'm certain SEALs and any specialists in SOCOM roles know how to shoot a pistol under duress. I know some of them too.

I suggest you stay out of the woods or bring a friend who is properly armed.

BTW: Buffalo Bore +P 45 ACP = 960 fps (255gr. HARD CAST-FLAT NOSE)

I have no beef with Buffalo Bore and have shot some of their hardcast ammo. My bear gun is a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan in 454 Casull. Here's the spec:

Compare that ballistic data to 45 anything. Or even 10mm. It's not even close. That's how you stop a bear. Better yet, avoid and respect bears. You are a guest in their habitat.

Since I departed the PNW, I have downsized my bear gun to a Glock 20. The bears are fewer and a lot smaller in North Carolina. Even so, I wouldn't consider carrying a 45 1911 or any other 45 ACP handgun as a bear gun. I have a lifelong fondness for the 1911 and have almost as many as I do fingers and toes. It's just not a bear gun.

Sadly, I don't think there's another we can (by Oregon law) build today. I CAN OTOH, assemble an AR on a registered lower.

Registered? Guns are registered in OR?

Answered my own question with a search.

I simply made the statement I did about it. "Serialized" may make you feel better. and it's what I meant, but it's all the same. A serialized lower purchased here will indeed be REGISTERED.

And adding a serial number to your PMF by your LGS or a 'smith, and it's now in the database. That's part of the meaning of "the serial number that meets federal guidelines."

No longer a "spooky gun". It's now recorded.

And, if you add a serial number to your PMF, it defeats part of the purpose of a PMF.

Feeling your oats today?

Sort of. I get it. For some it's out of "necessity" for their "line of (illicit) work."

For the rest of us (law-abiding members here, for example), the idea of being "off the books" (not under the purview of the dot-gov) is attractive, even though most of us also own plenty of factory serialized firearms. It's just cool to have legal firearms that are not "in the system."

But if the only way I could build a PMF is on a serialized frame, I'd still enjoy the process of building a gun that is uniquely mine. And I have, in fact, done that a couple of times (serialized frames).

Not the same. I am a very literal person, so I say and mean things literally. And I read / hear things literally. There are some states that DO have firearms registries. I wasn't sure if OR was one of them or had become one of them.

Here are the states that have registration of some or all firearms.

Have you guys seen this recent video (on X)? Dude shot a bear in his house... with an AR-15.

Oh I do agree. But I'm done with Glock clones or other striker-fired weapons. But another AR build is quite attractive, but it will be serialized when I build it.

I don't know what to tell you, as I've been told by TWO different LGS (By one of whom is the owner) here in Southern Oregon within the last 6 months that any serialization done here by a LGS or 'Smith is recorded, by law. Think of that what you will. I will try to get the Clear, FACTUAL final word on this, but I think I already have.

Whatever you can Google is suspect. Case in Point, Oregon recently "voted-in" (or did we, truthfully?) a bill that includes a High capacity mag ban. (anything over 10 rounds verboten). Yet, that bill is tied-up in litigation and IS NOT ACTIVE LAW right now until the dust settles.

Yet, there are some sellers, Midway, and others (quite a few actually) that thinks it's LAW and will not sell you a high-cap gun OR magazine to me in Oregon. I just went through this with Midway trying to buy a few magazines and told them I'm done with them as they have their facts WRONG. I can go into the LGS here and buy ANY High Cap firearm (like the Reflex I just purchased), or high-cap magazine LEGALLY, and there ARE some online vendors that will still sell to me, like GunMagWarehouse and others, who have done their brief due diligence and know the facts of the issue.

While I understand their not wanting to jeopardize their business if they step over the line, it's sheer laziness when the Business in question can make the right query to find out the truth instead of reading the first thing they find, and clearly unsupportive of the 2nd amendment in so doing.

It's a beautiful state. I could never live there. I spent the summer of 1979 there - with my two uncles... one in Ashland, the other in Eugene.

We will be leaving soon. Yes it IS a beautiful state, and So OR is far FAR more conservative than Salem/Eugene and north, with the exception of Ashland. But, sadly, the liberal infection is gaining a foothold here.

Reminds me of the story where David Coverdale told the story (of his now former Lake Tahoe home) finding a bear in his kitchen for the first time (and it happened more than once): "the bear was in the kitchen. I screamed. He screamed. And shit on the floor. Then turned around and left the way he came-in."

He bought a home in Reno and moved there. He'd been a Tahoe resident for many years.

Interesting. A rifle will dispatch just about anything with a pulse pretty quick. As will a RCP.

A bear home invasion isnt that unusual. Bears are clever. They are constantly looking for food wherever they can find it. They can and do tear the door off a car if they smell food inside. Or a pickanik basket :)

The speed of an AR-15 bullet, specifically the .223 Remington/5.56 NATO ammunition, typically ranges from 2,700 to 3,100 fps when fired from a standard 16-inch barrel. That's over 3 times the velocity of the 45 +p.

This dude had an 11 inch AR pistol but it's still high velocity. Easier to point and fire. Sounded like he fired maybe 6-8 rounds and at very close range.

The reason guides and hunters dont strap on a AR pistol is it's too big and awkward. You dont have time to present the gun and fire as you would a pistol in a chest rig.

May I add this asshole shot a cub. The size of a medium sized dog. That was utterly unnecessary.

I agree. I think I would have backed up and tried to scare it away. And then I'd go change my shorts. ;)
Who know if Mama bear was right behind??...but a cub itself, not necessary from what it appears.

I hit a bear cub once on a two lane highway in Montana - he'd just come up from the river heading to the other side of the road for berries. A few truckers stopped and helped get the cub off the road till fish and game could come pick him up.

I was worried about the momma bear showing up, but she never did.

A month or so later fish and game released him back into the wild.

I would not have wanted to deal with him if he was awake.

Even at his young age his claws were intimidating.

True but they are more curious than aggressive. They run if you scare them.

My guess is the dude has a dog door. Or left a door open. Sad. People build houses in their habitat then get pissed off and kill them when they are foraging.

This asshole wanted to kill something.

Love it there. Beautiful scenery. Nice people. Just don't want the winters. Had enough snow and ice and freezing ass weather when I was a kid. Never again.
