My wife and I acquired new cellphones yesterday- first, to replace her well over (tech-wise) 6 year old iPhone 8+, and while my dad, to upgrade my 8+ had given me his 13 Pro Max a few years ago because he hated it (he can't handle cellphones at all and beat the crap out of this one and I was tired of the issues, & wanting something minty-fresh and unmolested, out of the box, I traded it in towards a replacement) so we went for it.

viva la difference! Whist mine has a lesser learning curve from 13ProMax to 17PM, my wife's really having to reassess her device moving from the 8+ to the 17PM, but fortunately, it's pretty intuitive.

But I will say this: I did dread the transition. Happily, we did get that assistance onsite, and everything moved-over to the new phones...you know the drill: then came the various logins and what not on all the apps, as that does NOT carry-over, aside from the Password Manager itself, which does somewhat simplify things a bit. But like the title of the thread, in a way it's like moving into a new dwelling. Uggh. But we're on the downhill side of it- and the change just between 13 and 17 are significant and welcome.

Overall, the functionality of the phones is awesome. And now my wife can use some apps that wouldn't work anymore or allow to be updated because of the age of the hardware and iOS offersed no legacy support for a phone that old. Which, not matter what platform, that changes with hardware.

Meanwhile, technology marches onwards and when the 18 series is released in September 2026, we'll likely jump onboard. I ditched Android years ago after getting constantly disappointed with each new iteration- after 5 or 6 consecutive Android phones, I jumped ship & and am never going back to that bastardized iOS ripoff that Eric Schmidt had cobbled together whist he was on the board of Apple with Steve Jobs...right under his nose.

What ever works for you all, that's fine. I know my younger son loves Android, but his wife does not and only will use iPhones. Shrugs.

This is not intended to be a cellphone war thread, peeps. But it's been an intense 24 hours- the had a glitch that required us to go back today and get it sorted (a VPN app causing issues) but she's full speed ahead now. Cheers.

I am the only one in the house who uses Androids. I have an OLD Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus as MY phone (8yrs old?). My biz line runs on an even OLDER 10yr-old S7. Both phones still run great and both came (at separate times) from a lady whom I'll call my "Cellphone Fairy". :D

13ish years ago the fam of 4 all got brand new Galaxy S3s for Christmas. All got cases and screen protectors. The kid's lasted maybe 2-3 yrs  before they had killed them and were replaced with like-new, but used, S5 Actives. When those were killed, they got used Iphone 7s partially paid for with their own money. I eventually picked up a used S5 and an additional phone line for myself and kept the biz line on the S3. (ie: FIVE phone lines)

My wife and I's S3s functioned perfectly until ATT decided to do away with networks less than 4G around 2022. The S3s were 3G and ceased to be able to connect to the 4G network. Both phones still work BTW, and I charge them every couple months when I think about it. (gets up to get the S3s off the shelf and plug them into the chargers) To account for this inconvenience, ATT sent us "free" 4G phones that were "stripper" phones with Android Lite and limited functionality. I used mine for a week or so until I couldn't stand it anymore and got another used S5 for the biz line. I specifically can't stand the buttons only on one side. My wife got my son's old Iphone 7S+ as he had upgraded to a 12S+.

Then my S5 screen died and I had to buy a cheap screen to plug in (phone disassembled) so I could gather my data off it. A lady (my Cellphone Fairy :) ) was advertising an S7 nearby and turns out our kids were in Scouts together. :) A deal at $60, that phone is still in use.

Maybe a year later the other S5 died and I had to use one of the ATT cheapies for a couple weeks until I found an S9 nearby and turns out it was the same woman as before--my Cellphone Fairy. :) I'm still using that phone and it takes most of the pics I post here. I dropped it on its face probably a year ago, cracking the screen and my bad for not getting a protector. :( But it still works and I'm not eager to have to replace it.

All my S phones had/have MagPul cases BTW. They no longer make phone cases. :( The cases have that waffle pattern and texture many of us like. :) I have them in both black and FDE.

I'm with @Bobster on the Android side. Wifey and I stick with Android because of comfort with the platform we have used for so long and because we've never had any negative issues with it (YMMV).

We I just upgraded our Google Pixel 7 phones to the new Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Super smooth change over! All of our data and apps transferred over perfectly. The only PITA is having to log into every app anew, just like @One Ping Only said. We usually keep phones for 4-5 years. We did this upgrade at 3 years because they tempted us with a really good deal and I've been wanting the folding screen for quite a while. It's amazing for doing work (spreadsheets, PowerBI, CRM) on your phone! The wife likes to game on her phone and loves the big screen for that.

I'm running a Samsung Galaxy S9... Eight years old! And running fine. I cannot stomach the prices of new phones. They cost more than a good laptop computer, and that's fucking NUTS. I just can't do it. I'll keep using my old phone as long as possible.

Last year I finally upgraded my J7 Android.
My AD400 still turns on.

I can honestly say our transfers to the new iPhones went as good as it gets overall…and fairly speedy transfer as well. The glitch my wife had was from a Surfshark vpn, that had installed switched “on” as it was on her old device, and was blocking the internet connection on her new phone. Once switched off and uninstalled, she’s had zero problems. I’m ditching them as SurfShark has caused a number of glitches and connectivity issues and I’ve just kept mine turned off. Our bitdefender mobile security has its own VPN, so the other SS VPN is a redundant and problematic clutter that we’re dropping.

If we’re talking ‘good laptop computer’ that means Mac in our house and they still are more expensive than these iPhones. Once an ardent windows guy- I built them, serviced them etc for years, I finally got fed up with Microsoft’s crap and walked away from any windows devices some time ago and our last win laptop bit the dust a few years back- it was my Mom’s that my wife inherited when Mom passed in 2017. I don’t miss them or miss working on them. Hehe.

Btw I still have my iPhone 8+ turns on fine and works fine, aside from the device not having any legacy support by iOS (and many current apps and browsers) as it as made in 2017. So it’s in the box.

Have both, the Samsung is definitely built better and has had zero issues. Phone is much older and camera is still better than an iPhone.

I can say this camera in the 17 pro max is amazing. That being said, NO cellphone camera will ever equal a decent real camera and glass…Again I’m not looking to convert anyone to iPhone, and I’m sure as hell not going to go back to Android OR Windows. Not gonna happen. Nor will I purchase anything with android running the system.

Whoops how did that happen?? lol

When I was getting my new iPhone, I noticed the people working in the phone store all had Galaxy’s. I asked why and they all said iPhones suck and were asking me why I wasn’t going with another Galaxy. Short story, I wanted to use the Apple video chat with family. Guess what I’ve never used.

I don’t hate iPhones but they are not intuitive in the settings. The phone whants you to do what it wants you to do and not what you want the phone to do. Galaxy is much more customizable. If I were to make a comparison, the iPhone is like a grumpy French artist who thinks he is better than he is while the Galaxy is the nerdy quiet scientist getting his 5th PHD and always looking to learn.

I'm just sitting here on my Moto Edge 2025. Last one was a play that was still working but wasn't useable with a particular carrier.. Costs next to nothing compared to iPhones. Transfer was so simple, plug the two phones in to each other, follow a couple on screen prompts, and Viola. I have had nothing but Motorola's since my first bag phone in 93. My wife has had a couple Samsung's but comes back to Motorola since I can show her how to use it when she has troubles. And yes, the passwords on the first time use of apps sucks. I use the password/autofill because I can't remember the damn things.

I've never been a huge Apple fan, but when they got busted remotely limiting battery capacity to force users to buy newer phones, that was it. They even had the balls to say it was within their rights because they considered themselves as the real owner of the phone, not the consumer who had paid to purchase it.

For me, I've found exactly the opposite with phones and that Android is the least intuitive- maybe more 'customizable' in ways I don't want or need. My younger son is like that and why he uses/likes Android.

The very reason Apple doesn't have a manual is because they are so intuitive- yet, and here's the catch- and we have to be honest, if we are used to the Windows way of doing things and have that burned into our brain, it's not like MAC OSX/iOS, etc. Once you unlearn that/adapt, the iPhones are ultra simple....and yet to this day after decades of WINDOWS- from '95 on up, I'm still unlearning some of those Windows ways and then I find out that it was me, not the phone that's the problem. snort.

The very few 'limitations' I've experienced are nothing burgers. Oh and isn't it interesting that Windows is essentially a bastardized version of Apple's OSX as well. Gates shamelessly stole the idea from Jobs and adapted it to an x86 architecture- MICROSOFT OFFICE was originally written for MAC, Bill Gates bought it and had it adapted for WINDOWS, and to this day will admit that OFFICE runs better on a MAC. Because that's what it was designed for. snort.

Then the cherry on top is, Android is a bastardized ripoff of iOS, all thanks to Eric Schmitt. It's EXACTLY what it is no offense whatsoever....and that's what initially drew me to Android when I was still in Windows land....but I found the 'bonuses'; weren't cutting the mustard. True, there have been things opened-up to allow things to be done with Android that Apple won't allow, but FOR ME it matters not, as I don't need or want those things.

Again- my computer and phones are glorified toasters. Make me a slice of toast. Serve ME, not the other way around. And so that's what it does.

What ever you have and use and like it, that's fine.

They even had the balls to say it was within their rights because they considered themselves as the real owner of the phone, not the consumer who had paid to purchase it.
Now consider what Gates is really all about. An evil anti-humanitarian on so many levels. Pick your poison.

And you don't own your Android or Windows software either. You purchase the right to use it. That's all.

Both have their pitfalls and both share some of the same. Ultimately, I want a Satphone with the Blackberry OS. If anybody will produce it. Supposedly Elon has a cellphone in the works, too.

At least our new phones are compatible with Elon's satellites if the cellular systems crash.

Honestly, I didn't think Motorola was still around. My first cell phone was a Motorola... Startac, I think it was called.
