The old Chevette was reliable but a POS in terms of well everything except the ability to start and go into drive. The mid 70's to mid 80's were dark times for GM. It was the US/GM answer to the Honda back in the 70's and 80's. A buddy of mine had one and I borrowed it from time to time as at the time I didn't have a car. It had just enough power to move itself out of the way but it was less of a POS than the Mustang II with a 4 cylinder. The Mustang had a much nicer interior, but the engine was pretty terrible as it didn't have the power to get out of its own way.
 
Hey, my first car was a ‘77 Chevette. Baby blue, 4 speed. I could actually chirp the tires in 1st gear. Got it airborn once. Needless to say, I only had it for 6months. Sold it to a friend for 50 bucks. 66 Mustang GT convertible was next.
