It is possible to create steel using processes that don't require any metallurgical coal (coke). New steelmaking processes such as Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) allow hydrogen to act as a reducing agent when making steel from pig iron. Some companies are starting to do this but it’s new and costly. On the other hand, emission treatment systems are costly too, so it’s starting to make sense financially to implement these new technologies.

I worked in a lot of steel mills. The smell of the coke batteries firing up is unique. I’d know that smell anywhere. Oddly, it smelled good to me. Another is a paper mill. I know that smell too. It’s unmistakable. Maybe I was a dog in a previous life?
