Apple Krate, Orange Crate, Lemon Peeler, then came a green and white one. I cant recall what they named those.

My brothers had a Margay (?) go cart. It looked like this. My father sold it in a garage sale. I was too little to drive it. It was fast as Hell! My eldest brother swapped the original with a chain saw engine.

Those 'Krate' bikes were the shit when I was a kid. Everybody wanted one. Once I got off training wheels I started asking for one of those. I was small even for that bike, but my Godmother gave it to me for Christmas anyway. I don't think I ever received a gift I loved more. It was freezing ass cold and I didnt care. My feet could barely reach the ground - I was in second grade. I rode it until I was in middle school. Replaced by a Schwinn Continental ten speed in banana yellow. That bike got stolen a month later. One of the events that fuels my profound dislike of thieves.

I never replaced that Continental because I was close to getting a drivers license. Cars and chicks became more important to me than a nice bicycle. :)

Back in the 70's, I was in the bike biz.

Schwinn only made the Krate bikes for 5 years, from 68-73.
As BL notes, the first year there was Apple Krate (red) Orange Krate (orange) Lemon Peeler (yellow).

For 69, they added Pea Picker (green).

for 70, Cotton Picker (white) was added. Can you imagine that today?

For 71, they added Grey Ghost (silver)

By 72, the white and silver were gone from the catalog.

And for the last year of production, colors were back to the original 3 colors from 68.

Price in 68 was $86.95, which is $775.34 in 2023 inflated dollars.

Over the 5 years, Schwinn added and deleted features, I'm guessing to control the price. By 73, MSRP was $119.95. That's $837.00 in Biden dollars.

2020

Schwinn brings back the Krates in a limited run. So, BL can re-visit his childhood and experience the joy of a brand new Krate bike for the second time and once again be the coolest kid on the block. :cool:

Grape Krate (purple)
Orange Krate (orange)

The orange and black show "In Stock" on Amazon.
