Classic

There are a few options for mounting an optic on a carry handle.
I only have one ar with a carry handle and had considered an optic and was surprised by how common they actually are.
There are mounts that have see through channels, so that you can also still use your irons.

If you want to keep is classic looking, this is one option.

AR-15/M16 4X RETRO CARRY HANDLE SCOPE | Brownells

I have one of those pic rails that attaches via the hole in the handle. Haven't mounted it yet but I think the handle will raise the scope up for better viewing/clearance instead of having to use risers.

You can also get a pic rail for the top of the forend and set up a cowitness red dot.

You can get a carry handle for a flat top receiver. They are not always available. It took a year for one I back ordered from PSA to show up. From 5 feet away, it looks like a classic upper. It gives you options for sights and a carry handle or a flat top to mount a scope directly.

A long time ago, I got a Swift AR-15 carry handle scope. It was made in Japan and pretty good quality. It was a loose fit on the Olympic I had at the time but good and tight on the PSA carry handle mentioned above.

The NcStar carry handles I looked at were pure garbage. The PSA is made in the USA and great quality.

I got a US mil-surp forged handle in "like-new" condition for about $45 on debay 10yrs ago. Lucked out on that one. Most of the forged, surplus handles being auctioned were quite beat up. Forged units will usually have a forge mark like some lowers and uppers.

I got a cast Chinee unit for around $20 that was/is garbagy and never made it on a gun. The main thing to consider are the sights--some versions are taller/shorter and you have to have the matching front sight post/gas block.

PS: IMO, the cheapest way to buy a quality handle is to buy it WITH an upper/gun as a package.

The CHEAPEST way to go is a carry handle mount.

The BEST way to go is to buy a flat top upper and swap the carry handle upper for the flat top. It's not that hard. Holler if you want the Cliff Notes on that.

Then if you want the carry handle again, get a detachable one.

Check out these guys

There are less expensive options on Amazon and Ebay. Many different options, depending on what optic you want to go with.

It's one of those things. Do you want a carry handle or an optic. Carry handles are great for a 60's retro gun. Get a flat top for an optic.

My carry handle is detachable actually. Don't know why I didn't think of that
