Couple of weeks ago we once again stayed in the cabin near Sylva, NC. On the way home, the wife wanted to stop at the Farmers Market in Cashiers, NC. One of the items purchased was a bag of garlic cheese grits. Had some this morning with breakfast. Very tasty. Recommended if you like grits. Even if you don't like plain grits, you will like these. Corn meal was coarse ground and the ratio of cheese and garlic was just right without being too little, or overpowering.
They also have speckled grits with bacon and 10 varieties of flavored rice. Looking forward to trying some of those.

Company that makes this is female/veteran owned and was started by the owners grandmother right here in Sumter, SC.

I didn't either in my youth.
Plain grits are rather bland. But they respond well to spices and inclusion of other tasty bits like shrimp, cheese, butter, and bacon.

The woman in the Milk Bone thread liked grits, but though Cream of Wheat was "nasty". I said, you realize both are basically the same just one is made from corn and the other wheat. She still made a face and wouldn't try CofW. Don't think she ever tried it.

The morale of the story is like the tag line in the old TV commercial for Alka-Seltzer, "Try it, you'll like it." 😋

According to this article, it's not so much the grits themselves that spike your sugar, it's the other stuff peeps put in them.

Trust me, processed corn, rice, and wheat are like rockets to blood sugar or, at least, mine. I know exactly what does and doesn’t as I’m constantly monitoring. Those carb balance products? I thought they were hocus-pocus but I was wrong. They do work and do not increase blood sugars much if at all.

When we came back from overseas (to Arkansas), we were considered foreigners by the locals anyway. They truly had no concept of American expatriates.

When I showed up at the high school on the first day (as a junior), they asked me, "Are you a dopehead or a redneck?" Yep. True story. Which choice won't get my ass kicked right now? :unsure:

My dad (born in Brooklyn) has been there for over 40 years and he's STILL not really one of them.

Agreed. If you assimilate and "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" you are OK. But if you retain your speech and behavior patterns from whence you came, then no. Then you will have it explained to you the difference between a Yankee, and a Damn Yankee. 😯
A Brooklyn accent in Arkansas...(my grandparents were from Brooklyn and Queens) betcha he got a lot of raised eyebrows back in the day.

Oh, no. Dad doesn't have a Brooklyn accent. He was born there but moved to Miami, FL when he was 12 years old. He doesn't even have a "New York" accent. But he doesn't have a SOUTHERN accent, either. Same with me. Probably the closest thing would be "midwest" or simply no accent.

Not having a southern accent and not being "kin to" anyone in the area is the deal-breaker. That was the SECOND question I was asked: "Who ya KIN to?" Ummm.... I'm not related to anyone here. Everyone I met were "cousins" to each other. No shit.
 
I was born Yankee but began a migration south. From Maryland, to DC (Virginia) to Georgia then to North Carolina. Add Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Washington, Oregon, California and seven years as an international man of mystery with no place I called home.

Grits gotta be done right. I like the traditional style for breakfast with eggs and bacon. With a little red eye gravy on top.

I also learned to make shrimp and grits like a pro. Man, is it good. Like anything else, it's all about how fresh the ingredients are. Cheddar cheese, scallions, zucchini, garlic, homegrown tomatoes, lemon and butter. I also add a bit of shoe peg corn kernels to the grits to give it a slightly different texture.

Everyone has an accent. They may not think they do, but they do. I've had peeps here tell me they have no accent. Really? Let's tape record you and play it back. 😯

When I was a kid we took a trip to Canada. They had a woman at the border who I presume was either Immigration or BP asking returning Americans where they were born. When I said California, she obviously had a look on her face that indicated "that does not compute". Then she asked where I grew up and then that answer made sense to her.

A few years ago the kid that lived across the street growing up found me and we talked on the phone a bit. He said he couldn't get over my "Southern accent". I said you sound like an extra on the Soprano's. Growing up, I didn't think we had an accent, but we did.

Yep, found that out too. You have to be careful about criticism. Everyone is related either by blood or marriage it seems. o_O
