Warning! If You Buy a New Car, Read This

I'm not too worried about this - yet :)

After 9 years with a Corvette and my last 4 trucks able to go 0 - 60 in the low 6 second range my insurance company would be shocked if I suddenly started driving sedately :)

Part 2: The DUI "Kill Switch".

Mandated for all new cars after 2026. Car will "monitor" your driving and have the ability to "prevent or limit motor vehicle operation" if "impairment is detected".
No details on how this will be accomplished, but maybe with AI inside? And no doubt this data will be sold to insurance companies as well.

I see an aftermarket demand for a kill switch for the kill switch...or at least instructions on how to deactivate it.

It looks like NHTSA will be given the task of turning a vague Congressional "safety" mandate into some sure 'nuff Orwellian surveillance program.
Will other alphabet agencies get involved and add stuff they want to the electronics package? They'll be missing a golden opportunity if they don't.

Great, some battered woman will be driving erratically while being chased by her deranged significant other and the car will stop allowing him (or her) to commence /continue the attack.

As always, unintended consequences that go far beyond the original intent.
If this is allowed to move forward, there will be more no one has thought of yet...but AI will make possible.

Will it eavesdrop on your conversation like Alexa and record everything you say to an NSA server in the desert? If it hears you say you're going to party with your friends at Tony's bar, will it tip off the cops so they can have a sobriety check point between Tony's and your house, knowing the route you will take to go home?
Of course it will be GPS enabled. Will it automatically have a speeding ticket mailed to you if you exceed the speed limit by 10 m.p.h. on an empty stretch of road at 2am when no one is around?

Lots of questions. No answers.

About once a month I head to south Orlando which involves an outer "loop" toll road. I COULD go I-4 and then use regular surface streets to avoid the tolls but that would add an estimated 45 minutes to a 45 minute drive. I have an Epass so I just zoom through the toll stations and in fact, they have 3-4 lanes pass-through with an over-structure that records Epass data and/or takes pics if you choose "Toll by Plate" where they tack on a fee and send you a bill. Epass deducts a reduced toll from a balance you keep with them. My balance is at least $20 and when it drops below that it will auto-debit $10 from my account. So in other words, you NEVER have to stop for tolls.

But I ALWAYS wonder if I'm going to get a ticket in the mail when I pass under one of these over-structures "going with the flow" which may be 10-15mph higher than the limit...

Nope.

I recently switched to State Farm insurance with the driveways app. They put a little tracker in your car and it reports your driving habits. I told my wife we really needed it, but then secretly I removed it from my truck.

But she still has it in her car so I can ridicule her driving habits

It was nice knowing you

So I'm reading the news today and this article pops up on my feed.
It seems some phone apps spy on your driving now. If you don't read the fine print, and download the app, it will record your driving habits and sell the data to a third party broker who, guess what? Sells it to the insurance companies.
These three apps are mentioned in the article.
Life360
MyRadar
GasBuddy

Those Faraday bags for cell phones I see advertised are starting to look more interesting.

No way I'd allow a tracker in my car. Not even for a "discount." No freakin' way. But I also cannot, for the life of me, understand why anyone would install a "smart speaker"... aka a BUG... in their own home for someone else to listen any time they want. Crazy.

Nope. Hard pass for me.

Never gunna happen. There might 100 politicians that dont drive drunk and those 100 are customers of Hunter Biden.

Ofcourse there's the it doesnt apply to the elite
