Video Is your new car actually spying on you? (The unpalatable truth.)

Have you ever noticed that you can have a conversation around your phone or computer about something you need or want, and you start seeing ads for exactly the item you were discussing?

Actually, NO. Absolutely never. Why / how? Because I turned off the voice command / microphone on my phone as soon as I got it.

But, yes... many people I know have reported that. But they all have their voice command / mic turned on... since they like using it.

I can honestly say it has never happened to me. You can turn that shit off.

I have a 2013 Acura TSX as my daily driver. Other than maybe having a push start option, I don't want any of the new tech offered in cars. Specifically, the trend toward everything being on a touch screen to me is senseless. That screen goes out and so does the ability to control AC/Defroster, etc. My wife has a 2014 Lexus and you need to go through multiple menu options on the screen (not a touch) turn turn off/on the AC. In a world where distracted driving is an issue, I need/want a dash button not a nav screen.

And yea, I don't own Alexa or any of that crap in my home and don't have the microphone turned on on my phone. We are focused on the 2nd Amendment as a general topic on this forum, but as a society we are flushing the 4th & 5th away (others too??) as technology evolves and we blindly accept it - this concerns me too.

Agree across the board.

I am NOT a fan of touch screens. I like physical buttons. But touch screens are MUCH cheaper to make and integrate into cars. And here we are. I agree about touch screens causing distracted driving, as well.

The argument that just makes steam come out of my ears is when people justify giving up MORE of their privacy (in exchange for "convenience") by pointing out, "you've already given up some of your privacy, soooo...." Aaaaaaaaaaagh! So, the answer is to give ALL of it up!?!??

All these fucking lunatics walking around talking to themselves...

I was a late adopter of cell phones, then "smart" phones. My phone is probably 5 years old but does all I need it to do. I keep just about everything OFF, data, location, wi-fi, voice commands, etc. Need to use GPS, I'll turn it on. I used an Insta360 (like a small GoPro) and app today that requires a bunch of stuff be turned on, including wi-fi. The only reason I could see for wi-fi (the 360 uses BT to pair with the ph) was to send ads to you when you were in range of a wifi network...

One thing I think that is not yet realized by the greenies is that inexperienced drivers will be crashing EVs far more frequently due to the power available. Sort of like giving a 500S&W revolver to a noob at the range... ;)

Yep... Mine is 5 years old. Samsung Galaxy S9. Does everything I need it to do and many things I don't (which I have turned off).

Same phone I have (the bigger screen one). (y) So I guess that makes us brothers-in-arms AND phones? :D

PS: a good investment was a MagPul phone case (FDE). I've had them on the past 3 Galaxys I've had (S3, S5 and S7). I suppose I have an aversion to even-numbered Galaxy models...;) Sadly, MagPul no longer makes phone cases. :(

All it's going to take is a breakthru in battery technology. The research money and scientific effort going into battery technology is staggering. It's going to happen no matter how much petroleum lovers stomp their feet and say it isnt. There are already batteries in labs that have 2-3 times the capacity of today's best batteries. People can deny it all they want. Gas and diesel powered vehicles are going to be gone in less than 50 years. Even the oil companies know this. In 20 years most non commercial vehicles will be EV. Range is a problem that's going to be solved. Saying this isn't going to happen is like the guy who said if ships were meant to have engines, God would not have given us canvas and wind. Internal combustion engine cars are going to be in museums and collectors garages. Gas stations will disappear like hat stores.

Charging is a different problem. I agree 100% nuclear energy is the only practical answer. I seriously doubt anybody is ever going to build a new coal or gas or oil burning power plant. Those days are over. Nukes will make a comeback. Solar and wind can't deliver enough energy to meet the overall demand. Also, modernizing the power grid. It's not that there are no answers to cleaner or more efficient power generation or updating the power grid. It's the issue of who will bear the cost, irrational public fear of nuclear, and stupid and crooked politicians and regulators that are holding back progress.

Its sad that with all the possibilities we have afforded to us with new technology, that the focus is on separating a fool from their money.
Also it is very concerning that with this new technology comes the ability to sway and/or provoke a mass response from unwitting public. I believe we witnessed a very limited response during last election and with the targeting of children by FB lawsuits.
The wildly abusive prescribing of mental health medications for off label uses, coupled with the ability of constant and a unrelenting suggestive manipulation. Its a powder keg just waiting for a match.

I rock a J7 and a original Galaxy. Galaxy is used for music and shop notes/pics- no cell service is even available for it lol.
J7 isnt far behind with several data attacks/burst monthly that attempt to smoke the battery. 2x or monthly I have pull batt & wait 16+hrs - it does a data transfer in the terabytes and becomes to hot to touch.

Invasion or the disappearance of privacy is another thing all together. I dont believe not using the technology is practical unless you want to live like Ted Kaczynski in a filthy shed in Nebraska. I think the answer is to use technology that functions as a counter measure to avoid tracking or compiling data about you. It requires effort to be relatively anonymous but lots people are doing it. I can't be bothered. Another approach is to overwhelm the data collectors with false info so their algorithms can never figure out your true patterns of buying or preferences.

I'm not an expert on the subject of counter measures nor am I paranoid. The truth is I really have nothing anybody wants. Companies can present me with ads but they can't make me buy anything. Like telemarketers - I'm content wasting their time. I answer the phone and pretend to not speak English until they hang up. I was in that business. Your best and easiest defense is wasting their time. Or choose to live like a hermit.

I have the Otterbox Defender. It has worked a charm. Dropped many times. No cracks at all. Phone is like new!

That relates only to charge times and range. But another problem is weather. Cold temperatures (areas with winter) is a BIG problem. And we're back to the laws of Physics. Chemical reactions are affected by temperature. There's no way around that. Battery power PLUMMETS in cold temps.

t's going to happen no matter how much petroleum lovers stomp their feet and say it isnt. There are already batteries in labs that have 2-3 times the capacity of today's best batteries
Capacity is the least of the problems. It's where the energy to CHARGE them is going to come from. Also, the TIME that it takes to charge them is a BIG challenge to overcome. Americans like to travel cross-country. (See my comments about CONTROL later in this post.) EVs simply don't work for that. They work for local commuting, and that's pretty much it.

Gas and diesel powered vehicles are going to be gone in less than 50 years. Even the oil companies know this.
Really? Care to reference such "knowledge" by the oil companies?

LOL! Fantasy, IMO. Technology cannot overcome the laws of Physics. You can't get something (energy) from nothing. Energy cannot be created (more from less). It can only be converted to other forms of energy. It's the FIRST Law of Thermodynamics.

Are they over? Hmmmmm....

Germany is not the only European nation restarting coal-fired units to provide more energy security. The UK restarted some coal-fired generation this past summer to cope with rising demand for power during a heat wave. France also restarted a coal-fired power station last winter.

The Netherlands and Austria, too. Look'em all up!

Nukes will make a comeback.
If only. I highly doubt it.

Solar and wind can't deliver enough energy to meet the overall demand.
Aha! At least you recognize that fact. Back to the First Law. :) Unicorn farts and rainbows don't have the energy density needed for the HUGE demands we're talking about.

irrational public fear of nuclear,
Yep. We agree on that. But the public is largely irrational. Always has been. Always will be. Look at the recent EGREGIOUS example with the covid hysteria and the BLIND allegiance to the talking heads who brainwashed most of the public. But that's another tangent.

stupid and crooked politicians and regulators that are holding back progress.
True progress is made by a free market. And we're seeing the exact opposite with the current (tyrannically-leaning) gov't trying to FORCE EVs on the market. Their reasons have nothing to do with progress or environmentalism. Just like with anti-2A efforts, it's about CONTROL. With EVs, they can literally control (restrict) our movement with the push of a remote button. THAT'S what it's about.

The ruse about environmentalism and progress is exactly that... a fucking RUSE that is gobbled up by a largely gullible public. I mean come on... who would be against "environmentalism?" Who would be against "saving the planet?" Only a knuckle-dragging Troglodyte, right? Who would be against taking a shot so you don't kill grandma??? What kind of HORRIBLE person would refuse a shot so we can save Grandma?

But, I guess we'll see, eh? :)

I was a late adopter to the smart phones though a big part of the utility, to me, was being able to use a ride share service while traveling. I have gotten used to being able to check email , etc. Yea, turning off google or apple tracking "services" helps reduce the data dump though if you have any cellular phone then your movement can still be tracked by cell towers unless you turn the phone off.

Sounds like I upgrade about as often as you do. I went from a Galaxy S to an S7 and this summer when from the S7 to the S23. I tend to switch when the phone more or less stops working with the apps I need or otherwise becomes painfully sluggish to operate. The fact that they run around a grand makes it easy for me to not want a newer one as well.

Bingo on both counts. Same here.

It wasn't that long ago when $200 - $400 got you the top of the line phone. Now they're as much as a decent laptop computer, and that's CRAZY. I bristle at the notion of spending $1400 on a phone that won't even be supported in 4 years.

Really? Care to reference such "knowledge" by the oil companies?
How about the CEO of the second largest oil company in the world?

Even the Saudis get it. Fueling the Future: Saudi Arabia's Race for Electric Vehicle Dominance

The Biden administration is only parroting what the rest of the world is doing. All cars are going to be EVs - worldwide. That's not going to change now - no matter who doesn't like it. When there's no gasoline or it costs $20 a gallon, even the most curmudgeonly EV hater and lovers of piston engines will see the writing on the wall. Watch for gas stations closing in the next decade. That will be a sign.

I should also mention the people who seem to hate EVs the most will be dead or drooling and wearing diapers 20 years from now. They wont be buying cars. Those in their 60's or older... the EV marketers don't care what you think. You are not their customer.

People can talk all the smack they want and come up with 5000 reasons why the technology today isn't good enough. It's going to happen and the technology is going to evolve and deliver. Is it a good idea to be an early adopter? Probably not.

Two more reasons: 1. There is a lot of money to be made; 2. The oil companies aren't going out of business because of EVs. They are not going to even try to fight the trend. They will profit from it. There are thousands of products besides gasoline and diesel that are made from oil and they will still be in demand. Like the Exxon CEO says... they aren't that concerned.

That's sort of true but not the full story. European countries stupidly retired their nuclear power plants. Germany and that moron Merkel being among the most aggressive. Then they got caught with their pants down because demand increased - duh - and they had to restart old coal burning plants because their nukes were decommissioned and too expensive and time consuming to restart.

Those are the facts. France still has more nuclear power than any country in the world. They have a different problem. The plants are getting older and reaching the end of their usable life. Something like 70% of all electric power service in France is still nuclear.

How do I know all this? I don't. My father in law is a big kahuna with Sargent and Lundy. They built a lot of nuke plants.

Here's what I like: Physics. I aced it in college. My entire education, work, life has been in Science. It is the one thing I understand. It's why I like auto racing and guns... Applied Physics! :geek:

It's not a matter of whether I "like" EVs. It's a matter of the laws of Physics. Energy density. The First Law of Thermodynamics.

People can talk all the smack they want and come up with 5000 reasons why the technology today isn't good enough.
Really? You think I'm "talking smack?" LOL!

It's NOT that the technology "isn't good enough." I've never said that. But it is a fact that no amount of technology will overcome the First Law of Thermodynamics. You can't create energy where it doesn't exist. You can't get more out of something than is already in it.

The reality is that 10, 20, 30, 50 years from now, people will still be emotionally resisting nuclear power. It is the ONLY viable alternative fuel source to oil (which the earth has PLENTY of).

I could equally (and rightfully) mock the WILLFUL ignorance displayed by those who keep insisting that "technology" will defeat the Laws of Physics. LOL!

The reality that most people driving and advocating for EVs literally cannot answer the question, "Where does the electricity come from (right now)?" speaks volumes (of their profound ignorance). I've asked that question many times. When they are shown that about 2/3rds of the electricity charging their batteries comes from burning coal and natural gas, they shrug their shoulders or have the same expression that perpetually inhabits the face of Joe Biden (deer in the headlights). I wish I was joking when most of them answer that question with, "The wall."

Yep! I know. I couldn't believe the stupidity of shutting down the nuclear plants... and then depending on RUSSIA for.... OIL and COAL! LOL!

We agree on the nuclear issue. It's a tough sell to the muggles, because they've bought into the narrative fed to them by the tyrants, media, and Chicken Littles. The Fallacy of Misleading Vividness.

I thought it was close to 90%. Or was at one time. But yeah... they've led the way on nuclear.

Try building a nuke plant here. People lose their shit.

Nuclear is one of the safest sources.

Wind is higher than nuclear! LOL!

And, the energy density of enriched uranium is orders of magnitude higher than any other fuel source.
