How many of us (veterans) have had someone say to us, "Yeah, I almost joined." As if that is some sort of boast or feeble attempt to gain a slice of the respect pie due only to actual veterans. It's really quite the insult when you think about it.

Countless people making that claim to me. Along with "I would have, but......bla bla bla"

Sometimes I want to reply with "I almost bitch slapped you..."

My current supervisor went to college on the ROTC program and then didn't join.
I take that personally.

I missed getting into Annapolis by a few points in my exams.
I thought about asking for an appointment from my congressmen (or see if the Ambassador to Japan* had some sway with the President) but decided that would be unfair to someone who had the scores to get in.

I think I heard that now it's all appointments?

Off topic:
*The Ambassador to Japan was Mike Mansfield and one night in December 1982 in the hospital barracks in Yokosuka Japan I got woken up by the OOD with a message "The Ambassador to Japan would like you to call your parents"
To this day I maintain that that was the first and last time that phrase was said.
