New! PSA Dagger 9mm Single Port Compensator, Black, $50

I have a few ported/comped guns and I can feel the difference, though on some it's pretty small.
  • Kahr K40 with Kahr extended ported barrel - Small but noticeable reduction in muzzle flip
  • S&W 622 with Tandemkross Game Changer Pro comp - Slight difference, possibly due more to the increases weight at the muzzle than the porting
  • AKM47 with shortened barrel and PWS J-TAC47 muzzle brake - substantial reduction of muzzle flip and perceived recoil, but also a substantial increase in muzzle flash and noise
  • GST-9 with ATI Mass Driver comp - Definite noticeable difference in muzzle flip, no tuning required since it doesn't attach to the barrel

The two Hellcats I carry...

One has the optic and factory comp (which is indexed).
The other is a plain vanilla Hellcat. The standard SA U notch sights.

I have noticed a very slight difference in the one with the comp. Especially in a rapid fire drill. It helps a little with muzzle flip. For those who can't shoot a tight group, a comp isn't going to help them. Their problem isn't recoil or flip. It's their form and lack of good instruction and practice.

Gun marketing is a lot like iPhones. You buy the latest model and six months after it's released, they start telling you that the next model, coming out in six months is a major upgrade and why you need to trade in the one you just bought. And many do.

Now if everyone will excuse me, I'm going to jerk off while installing a major upgrade to iOS. It has AI!

Whoops! Just talking about it... I came in my pants. o_O

To the average dickslapper... no help at all.

It is good to know I'm not the ONLY dickslapper here... ;)

I might try one down the road--or not. ;) Your comments have been duly noted... :)

The SI Mass Driver is legit. I'm a much better shot with the Mass Driver than without. Like shockingly good, at least in my mind, with those guns. Just wish they made them for the large calibers.

When I bought my first Mass Driver, I was skeptical. I thought it might be a gimmick, but I was willing to give it a try. Boy was I surprised! It's definitely more than just the added weight in front. The combination of the weight, the redirected gasses and the physical motion of the comp on the guide rod can really be felt.

Check out the slow motion footage that starts at 6:15.

Interesting vid. Thx for posting it.

The flex and thus stress on the guide rod makes me a little nervous. When the comp completely separates from contact with the barrel, I can imagine the two not re-aligning under certain circumstances. Then the gun may not go into battery. On a range gun, no biggie. Defensive carry... I remain skeptical this device is a good idea.

I wonder if the weight is really doing anything. Other than just changing the balance of the gun. Could it just be that gas is being redirected like any comp ... and that explains the lesser muzzle flip?

Cleaning/disassembly would be kind of a pain in the ass. The part requires Loctite.

Part of the reason for the design of the Mass Driver is to be CA legal. Kalifornia won't allow a comp that is mounted to the barrel, so this design solves that issue.

I know I'm a sample of 1, but in the several hundred rounds I've fired through mine, I have had zero malfunctions and don't see any undue wear on the gun. The comp can't rotate enough to jam up the gun, and the shape of it's mating edge helps center it. The hole in the comp is considerably larger than the barrel, and the barrel never actually touches the comp at all. So it doesn't have to be perfectly centered. As for range vs defensive carry, I always keep my carry guns very lightly modified. This is definitely a range gun for me.

I can't say for sure which factor (or combination of them) makes the biggest difference, bit I can say that it makes getting the sights back on target very easy. I think a lot of people misunderstand the purpose of a comp and think it will make the gun shoot softer; it won't. Comps are about adding controllability.

Yes, it does make disassembly more of a PITA.

I frequently liken shooting to golf. The recent trend for comps aside, I'll share a broader point of view.

There's a gazillion products that promise to fix your slice or hook. Crazy training rigs that supposedly correct a bad swing. Balls that spin differently and fly straighter or longer due to a breakthru in dimple technology or the core is made from rare metals that came from an asteroid. Special tees that make sure the ball goes a certain way. Crazy expensive clubs built using rare metals and manufactured with top secret technology developed by NASA and Boeing engineers. Interestingly, mass driver technology has been implemented in golf clubs. It made nobody a better golfer.

Not all of this golf stuff is junk, but most of it is. Nothing helps if you suck at golf. As most golfers do. If you golf twice a year it is guaranteed you will suck. If you get proper training and play two or three times a week you will be good. Even if you play a lot - if you have no natural talent for it you will never be a scratch golfer with a zero handicap. Same goes for shooting sports. If you practice and have good form you can shoot any gun well.

Golf is about putting a ball in a small hole a 2-3 hundred yards away with the least number of strokes. Shooting for me is eliminating a threat in the least amount of time with the least number of bullets. Or killing an animal quickly and ethically so you can eat it. Target or steel shooting... for me that's always been about practicing all of the above. Getting the job done as efficiently as possible. Kind of like going to a driving range and hitting 100 balls to rehearse for the real thing - when the score matters. There are usually no sand traps, rough, or water hazards on the driving range. Nobody is shooting back at the gun range. The only threat is the douche in the lane next to you and an inattentive RSO. :)

My MassDriver is awesome on G17 build. Although it does prefer +P ammo. About 2ys of use.

Interesting as they say not to us +p ammo while us in it because it will wear out the spring. I have only used mine with range ammo and it is perrrrfect.

??? Using standard ball rds I get the occasional short stroke & recoil seems retarded/slow. The hotter defense rds and +p work perfect. Not quite 500rds of it yet. After 100 rds ball I was ready to toss it. I was having issue with extractor binding at the time. After fixing that and +p it preforms perfectly. There is minor signs of blow by wear lower edge of slide, but no impact or deformities.

Makes sense. Just as porting benefits big bore pistols. More gas, more downward force on the muzzle thru the comp. One of my 7mm bolt guns is "magnaported". It came that way. My other is not. I don't notice any difference using the same ammo. I don't know why porting is useful on a bolt gun.

I have a couple of 120+ year old Browning 12 ga semi auto shotguns that were among the first made. The serial numbers suggest 1903. They came to me with equally vintage Cutts compensators. I was told but can't confirm that this was a popular dealer option. It's also the only way to run a choke on these guns. Browning's first A-5 guns (made in Belgium by FN) were not threaded for a choke.

Over time, the average enthusiast will fall for a few new and exciting products that don't really work. I suggest a bin or drawer, sized proportional to your desire to "improve" something and income level. When this container is full, consider yourself educated on snake oil and physics defying objects. You are now fully qualified to hang out with the grumpy old dudes at gun shows and bitch about kids walking on your lawn. The upside is that by buying less stupid stuff, your gun fund will grow to the point you can consider real stuff like that dream gun that was always out of reach financially.

One should always make an effort to educate oneself before commenting on something they have never tried. Same crap I read on GT with Glock Homers talking about PMF’s. Just ignorance. Not stupidity, they have just never tried building their own pistol so they think Glock is the only company that can build a reliable Glock based gun.

The only downside is the Mass Driver is large, too large for concealed carry but the thing works and works well. Give one a try or, at least, do some research before commenting.

Your problem could have been the extractor and not the ammo. I’ve never had an issue with range ammo not cycling with the Mass Driver. Strike Industries specifically mentions not using +P Ammo.

Same results after the fix.
I happy your experience with ball ammo is favorable. Mine has not been.
So W/E

JFYI EVERY FN box of +P ammo comes with the FN warning of wear.
Its the nature of things.
