Article Link! The Great American EV Fire Sale Is About to Begin

Cool! A clock!
No... it's a chronometer.

Like Flavor Flave, everybody knew what time it was. :)

Today, EVs can drive themselves. Even tell you the date and time. Remind you to get a gift for your wife's birthday and ask if you want to go to the florist. Wake me up when we get there.

I had one of those when I was in H.S. That third toggle switch was F/F. A neat feature most 8-Tracks didn't have so you didn't have to suffer through the shitty songs to get to the good ones.
Had the gas pedal too.
As far as Boston goes... I'm pretty sure there were no good ones. :)

Yeah…. There’s no beating that sound.
I like old cars but for everyday driving I prefer the sound of silence in a factory stock Tesla Model X that can do zero to 60 faster than classic muscle cars or street rods. And do a quarter mile in nine seconds.

They could go even faster, but they are intentionally governed for safety reasons.

0 - 60 times mean almost nothing when it comes to performance driving. I can tell you they mean ABSOLUTELY nothing on a road course track.

And yeah... I love the sound, the feel, and even the smell of petrol burners. At the track (used to be my hobby) it was a feast for the senses!

When I had my 2004 STI with an aftermarket turbo-back exhaust, I would drive with the windows down (and a/c on), just to listen to that sound. It was my daily driver for 11 years.

I also got to attend the Indy 500 three times. All three times I had garage and pit passes. Standing literally next to an Indycar at start-up... oh, BABY!

You should have chosen a pic with a better 8-Track in it. ;)

Ha!

I must confess that I immediately leave the room if I hear pseudo folksy hippie music. Credence, Grateful Dead, Neil Young, all that 60s genre. Can’t stand it. I was forced to listen to it by my elder siblings. I think it’s corny and sucks.

Allow me to blaspheme even more by saying I fucking hated Led Zeppelin. I do however recognize Jimmy page as one of the great rock guitarists.

Add Jimmy Buffett to my list. Like Lennon said about McCartney… he’s silly.

I think the I glommed onto new wave and punk as a response to that tortured youth.

Nobody cares. One gazillionth of a percent of the population ever drive on a track. But they all like to go fast.

I agree racing is a huge spectator sport. But they all drive to the races in boring everyday vehicles and RVs. Which in ten years will all be EVs. :)

Going fast in a straight line is BORING, even on public roads. Sure, I love being pushed back into the seat as much as the next guy. But it gets boring and takes ZERO skill.

The twisties (public roads or tracks) are where the fun is. And EVs are PIGs. Heavy pigs = poor handling in the twisties.

There are some cool twisty highways around the country. None here in my state, mind you! That's one of the reasons I went to the track. Some day I'd love to drive the "Tail of the Dragon," which I believe is on the TN / NC border. I have driven on the Kancamangus Highway in New Hampshire... beautiful and lots of twisties.

There’s nothing wrong with liking ICE mobiles. Just like having an affection for planes with propellers is perfectly ok.

Where I draw the line is failing to realize both are artifacts of the past. I admit to finding dinosaurs interesting. :)

Hardly an artifact when they comprise 90% of the cars on the road today. And sales of EVs appear to have peaked or are declining. EVs are a niche market at best.

And they're still making cars for enthusiasts:

And the new ZR-1. Click here.

And they're not even hybrids. ICE, ICE, baby!

There will be high performance electric cars that drive like they are on rails. It’s inevitable. Most cars from the past up to the 70s and 80s were heavy and handled like bricks

True about the old muscle cars. Very poor handling.

But THE most important factor for handling is: WEIGHT. And batteries are HEAVY. Still. That's why EVs are tire-killers, even with normal driving on public roads.

Site Maintenance <--- Not sure why the link says that. But it's the new Corvette ZR-1.

It’s six computers with wheels. The engine is irrelevant.

It’s true these small “rice burners” are fun and appealing to certain drivers. Who get a lot of tickets. A performance car for road driving (as in not on a track) is utterly useless.

Even the cybertruck is faster than this Toyota. Most people’s twisties are parking in the garage at work and turning into thier driveway.

Weighing all the differences and benefits, I don’t care if tires wear faster on an EV. No gas stations or oil changes alone make that a trade off I can live with.

LOL! I drove the WRX and then the STI for a total of 13 years. I think I got one ticket. I drove the shit out of those cars on the track... and pushed them hard on public roads when I could. My "rice burner" STI could give Porsche 911s a run for the money on the track. At 1/4 the price.

The reason I bring up the track (even though less than 1% of car owners will ever see one) is that it is the proving ground for actual performance. Citing 0-60 times is almost meaningless. But it's great for marketing to people who know nothing about cars.

A lot of people buy "useless" performance cars and "off-road" vehicles that never use the for either purpose.... since the dawn of automobiles. What is the actual "use" of a cybertruck? I've never seen one being used for "truck stuff." No towing, hauling, etc. Just driving them around town.

I saw a Hummer EV today. Another "useless" behemoth. ;)

LOL! Cybertruck is a piece of shit. They can't give them away now. Look at all the evidence online. It's not faster. It's quicker (there's a difference)... in a straight line. Just don't turn it! LOL! Get on a track or a public road with turns, and the Toyota Corolla GR will eat the Cybertruck's lunch. So would my old 2004 STI.

Again... quoting straight line acceleration (0-60) is something real "car guys" laugh at. Unless you're drag racing, it means nothing... or as you would say, "useless." 🤪

That new ZR-1 is a "useless" monster!

EV - Schmee-vee! Listen to the sound of this car! Oh, baby! No EV can even come close to this experience.

I agree it sounds VERY nice but is a KIT car and I could do without most of the electronic gadgetry. Particular the push-button doors...

HEY NOW! 🖕 Boston was the first LP I ever bought! :) Still have the 3 albums on mp3.

What a "tuned" Subaru sounds like to me... :D

I have driven on the Kancamangus Highway in New Hampshire... beautiful and lots of twisties.

One Bike Week I rode up from RI with some Harley buddies of mine. One buddy busting my balls is like "You know Bob, if you break down, I don't know if we can wait around for you." :D I'm on a bright red CBR1000R sport bike. In a study of contrasts, there is a rider on a white '59 Panhead with chicken feet and racoon tails hanging off it. :D My buddy is on a POS Lowrider. 2 minutes into the trip, one of his muffler bands falls off and bounces right over me! I stopped following him at that point. 20min later he gets a flat. Luckily someone we know with a pickup saw us and stopped, we loaded the bike and went into town, fortunate to find someone to fix the nearly bald tire (with tube). Other than stopping 8 times for gas for the Sportster that was with us, the rest of the trip was uneventful.

Saturday morning riding into town I noticed some sport bikes with RI plates and happened to know a few of them. We did the biker stuff like witnessing boobs and burnouts. Sunday we headed north and ended up on the Kanka. Up to 65mph on the straights, slow to like 35 to take the many corners it was quite exhilarating! :) About halfway, we stopped, stripped down to our undies and took a swim in a river that followed the highway. On the way back home south on the interstate, we got up to 150mph taking sweeping turns at 100mph. The highway was nearly deserted until we got close to the exit for the race track then it became thick with traffic as we weaved in and out.

Yeah.... a "replicar." But it did sound really good! Can't get that from one of those pansy hippy-dippy EVs! ;)

Nothing like the "boxer growl." I can hear them and identify them before I can see them. Only 2 car companies make boxer engines now... Porsche and Subaru.

That tuned Subaru was a beast on the track. Many 911 drivers came to check it out after they couldn't keep up with me on the track... or I was all over them. When the car was new on the scene, they were blown away by it.... Then over time, they respected it as the real deal.

I still need to find time during the very short season that the Beartooth Highway is open to take the Corvette over that road with the top down :)

You have to be living in a bubble to dismiss drag racing. Autocross is the only amateur racing that compares to drag in terms of the numbers of participants. Drag racers think track drivers are fags. Just sayin. :)

Cybertruck is by design a truck. Compare it to any other truck as far as handling goes. Not some rice burner. It's faster than any other pickup truck on the market. Bar none.

The Hummer EV is an abomination. I went and looked at one. It really is a piece of shit. Trying to covert a gas burner to EV is a bad idea. The crab walk thing is utterly useless. Marketing bullshit.

I tried autocross once. Wow.... wait all day for a few 1-minute runs on a tiny course. Boooooooorrrrrrring. That was my 1st and last time. Autocross is for guys with limited budgets and want to have some "fun" with their cars.

My track days were officially called "HPDE" (high performance drivers education).... for "insurance purposes." They use full-size race tracks (road courses). It's not "racing" (for insurance purposes), as there is no timing and no "winners" (1st, 2nd, 3rd places, etc). Sessions run 20 - 30 minutes. Usually four sessions for a track day. So you can get up to 2 hours of track time. And trust me.... that's enough for a day. It's very demanding mentally and even physically.

HPDE track days are an expensive proposition, too. It's for serious car enthusiasts. It's been almost 20 years since I was doing it, and back then I estimated the cost to be about $1000 for the day. And I was being conservative for my wife's sake! ;)

I don't know any car guys that drag race. Drag racing street cars is about the same as auto-cross, IMO. It's a low-budget way to hammer your car and have a bit of fun. HPDE is hard on the car. Very hard. So, if you're going to do it on a regular basis, it entails some mods and / or a significant increase in maintenance and repair costs.

Cybertruck is by design a truck. Compare it to any other truck as far as handling goes. Not some rice burner. It's faster than any other pickup truck on the market. Bar none.
You're the one who compared it to the Toyota (see quote below). I can "guarantee" the Corolla GR (assuming a skilled driver) will leave the Cybertruck behind on a road course.

Even the cybertruck is faster than this Toyota.

The Hummer EV is an abomination. I went and looked at one. It really is a piece of shit. Trying to covert a gas burner to EV is a bad idea. The crab walk thing is utterly useless. Marketing bullshit.
I agree... When I saw the "crab walk" thing on their TV ad, my first thought was.... "And that's useful in exactly WHICH situation???"

Around here Cybertrucks and E-Hum-Vees are purely status symbols. None of them will be used for "truck stuff." But then again, around here the same is true for most Porsches, Ferraris, Lambos, and McLarens... Very few will ever be tracked or even pushed much on the streets.
