Analyzing the sequence of events, the homeowner came racing home from work to confront the maniac. He only had a shovel to confront the intruder because many urban areas in California are functionally still "may-issue" via delays and unconstitutional fees and requirements, not to mention overly-broad "sensitive areas". That is, if the homeowner wasn't a true believer anti-gunner himself. He probably isn't now though.

Fairfield is in Solano County. Their CCW page plainly says,

The Sheriff may issue a concealed weapons license to law-abiding residents of Solano County who is not prohibited from possessing, owning, or purchasing a firearm capable of being concealed upon his or her person, and comply with the provision of Penal Code Section §26150(a).


In accordance with PC §26150(a), and subject to department procedures, residents of Solano County may submit an application to the Sheriff’s CCW Coordinator. Applications will be individually investigated. An applicant interview may be required as part of this investigation. There’s a small, cottage industry of trainers who can teach you what to do if you find yourself in a situation where you are being attacked and have no weapon. There’s martial arts, which takes years to master. Also Krav Maga, which I did for a year. Then there’s more brutal techniques that have no formal name. Call it street fighting. Special Operators often get this type of training.

The fundamentals of the latter are essentially to become an animal. No discussion, no negotiation, you just go into full attack mode and there are no rules or hesitation. Gouge the dude's eyes out with your thumbs. Grab his hands and break the thumb or fingers. Bite his ear off. Or his fingers. Or his nose. Jam your fingers up the nostrils.

Sound crazy? It is. Most well-adjusted people are not wired to fight like this. Biting an attacker’s nose off or gouging his eye out ends the aggression. Every time. But going mad-dog crazy does not come naturally.

A bad guy wanders into my house thru an unlocked door? Or perhaps a hotel room? He’s going to start having a bad day within 5 seconds. Our natural instinct in the absence of training is to: 1. Be surprised and hesitate; 2. Questioning or yelling at the attacker in the hope they retreat; 3. Back off and try to keep a distance. This is also what an attacker expects. You gain the advantage in the fight by being hyper aggressive. No holds barred. When and if he falls you kick him until he stops moving.

Brutal, huh? When I was a kid I was a CYO boxer until I was 14 then and signed up for wrestling in middle school and later 3 years in high school. Technique is very important in both sports but the secret sauce is more about intensity than size and strength. Overwhelm and weaken your opponent as fast as possible. When your opponent feels pain or becomes exhausted, their lizard brain starts telling them to retreat. Or give up.

Correct but I was surmising that he wouldn't have his piece on him because he came directly from work to confront the attacker inside his home. He was viewing him remotely through the Ring camera from his device at work.

(BTW, apparently Ring isn't unalloyed goodness and has serious privacy implications according to recent reports...)
 
I didn't realize (or remember) that the homeowner wasn't home yet.

So, did the homeowner sneak around the back to get in the house? Or did the homeowner get home AFTER the bad guy was already inside? And the homeowner came through the garage and grabbed the shovel there?
 
I hate watching long video stories and skimmed past the part where the homeowner raced home after seeing the perp on camera. That was a stupid move. Especially for a victim that is unarmed. I thought the owner was in the house when the perp walked in. My bad.

First call in these circumstances should have been police. Never run into a burning building unless it’s to save a life. I would call 911 and report a home invasion, perp possibly armed. That will usually get the right response by the cops.

If you live in the boondocks like I do and the law is 30 minutes away, maybe go to the home and wait for the asshole to come out. Then present a firearm and tell him to get on the ground. If he doesn't cooperate or advances, no shit talk or debate. If he is within 7-10 yards, two rounds in the center mass. In most cases, game over. If he's a crackhead and doesn't drop, put a third round in his melon.

This scenario I've described above is where a small 'truck gun" like a PCC is useful. You can take out the threat from 30 yards vs. normal defensive handgun range, and have far less chance of missing at that distance. Bearing in mind you will be under duress.

There is nothing in your home worth going to prison or dying for. Or undergoing the expense of being charged. If the dude runs, let him go.

Same... I skimmed the video. So, I thought home-dude was home.

Unless my family was inside, I'm staying outside (and dialing 911). I'm not walking into a possible ambush (never mind assuming the good guy was unarmed). Let the police clear the house.
 
Unfortunately the home owner really had no choice to go inside because his wife and toddler were in there. This case really highlights the sick, sick insanity of the antigunner ideology. I believe the term of art is anarcho-tyranny:

the combination of oppressive government power against the innocent and the law-abiding and, simultaneously, a grotesque paralysis of the ability or the will to use that power to carry out basic public duties such as protection or public safety. It is characteristic of anarcho-tyranny that it not only fails to punish criminals and enforce legitimate order but also criminalizes the innocent, and in this respect its failures bring the country, or important parts of it, close to a state of anarchy. My wife would have put two rounds in his chest before I got there!

The way our home is set up, there would be no way for an intruder to surprise us. There’s only one way onto the property by vehicle. On foot, it is steep and thick with rocks, trees and scrub. The long, gravel driveway is intentionally noisy. There are cameras and alerts on anything that moves out there. Day and night.
 
Crazy people are strong and often immune to alot of deterrents.
I dont know how homeowner didnt bash his fkn head in with that shovel. He got the job done, Yea. This time.

This why I have a BIG DOG, gun and LotsObullets.

And a shovel
