What do we like for a tool to aid in installing striker spring cups?

I definitely feel like the odd-man out here, I just don't have a problem doing them by hand. [Shrug]

@no4mk1t 's method looks WAY better to me, as you can control and ease the Spring forward as gently as you want to. Cheap and easy tool to make, too.
Yeah, I can do it by hand and have done so for all my builds to date. But it is a bit hard on the fingers. If you had more than one to do at a time, your fingers might might get a little sore.
The tool makes it a breeze.

I edited my first comment a little -I watched the G.O.T. video linked in. I still like your tool design better.🙂 I've done several at a time without troubles, but I also ride motorcycles, so the clutch/brake handles give me decent hand-strength training.😁 (Hahaha.)

I don't think you are an odd-man out. Much like removing tabs and channel material, we all have different abilities which work from various angles. I see your point on the "slam" though considering the stress in general when the weapon is fired (repeatedly for 1,000s of rounds) not sure that it is an issue? Though I am a Computer Science major, not an engineer so ....

Thank you, I agree we all have our own ways of doing things.(y) It isn't the method of the journey, it is the destination itself, in this case.

I watched the G.O.T. video, and can see that if used properly, these tools can prevent slamming the Spring Cups into place on the Striker. However, if you simply 'snapped' the Striker out of the tool, it would cause the Spring Cups to impact their groove in the Striker-head with significant force. This is NOT how the Striker, Spring, and Spring Cups interact during operation. Once locked in place on the Striker, the Spring Cups STAY in that position throughout their use, unless completely disassembled again. NEVER do the Spring Cups 'snap' or slam into place during operation, rather the Spring pushes the Spacer Sleeve on the other side of the Striker, so the Spring Cup end is actually static, unmoving relative to the Striker. The Spring Cups should be gently 'nestled' into their groove in the Striker. Then tucked warmly into bed, with a glass of warm milk and a story...😁
 
@brian The original version does work. We'll try v4 to see if it's any better. How hard would it be to round the corners? That's really about the only thing I'd change to make it a little more comfortable to hold under tension.

@no4mk1t That looks like a good technique. I was picturing something like this while thinking of an easier way to perform this task, though my thought was to mount the thin steel (I was thinking a bisected washer) into a wooden holder modeled after the G.O.T. Your solution is much simpler.

@GSW10 I agree that most folks with well-functions fingers and normal dexterity can likely accomplish this with ease. This little tool, though, makes it fairly painless even with compromised hands. It's easy to align the cups properly, and there's no "snap" as one eases the assembly up from the tool.

Here's a V5 with a slightly longer space for the spring so not as much tension is needed. Let me look at rounding the corners. Also thinking of a way to come up with something like @no4mk1t suggests like with a holder for the end and then with a "pusher" wrapped around the spring.

I like V5, and agree that a little more length to the tool would be convenient. The spring is under considerable tension with V2, though it's still infinitely easier than doing this w/o the tool.

Sorry for all the versions - here's the V5 model with the top area rounded a bit. Will see if I can spend some time on the alternate tomorrow.

You are welcome. Thank you for trying them out. On the plus side, they are fairly simple to print. I'd be slower to churn out 12 hour print items ;)
 
There is room to improve on this. It does work either by putting the spring completely behind the notch or "threading" the end of the spring into the grooves. In both cases after inserting the sleeve/pin/spring, hold the spring cups in place while pulling out the firing pin tip to release the tension and trap the cups in place.

If you are able to print it and give a shot, let me know what you think.

The opening for the firing pin is a little snug. I'll ponder that as well as other tweaks to it like maybe opening the sleeve end so it can be slid in and locked in place.

For peeps without a 3D printer, but have a Dremel, I offer this solution.

Had these tags we use at work to engrave with valve numbers. Took a handful home to play with several years ago and used one tonight to see if a spring compression tool could be made quickly and easily.
Turns out that 5 minutes with the Dremel made the tool. You could easily make this from any piece of metal thin enough to go between the spring coils. An old dog rabies tag maybe, ideas will occur.

Cut a notch in it the width of the thick part of the striker. Beveled the edges a little.

So, here I'm holding tension on the striker spring and compressing it more than enough to insert the cups with my left hand only, while I'm taking the pic with my right hand. Using the slide as the holder. This does not take a lot of effort when you have something to press down with. Very easy. Not fatiguing to hold in position. The hardest part is fumbling with the cups to get them in place.

I saw that tool, however, all it seems to do is provide a stable platform for the striker assembly. It doesn't appear from the pix that it has any facility to hold the spring compressed, which is (was) my issue.

Exactly. A blown rotator cuff and some arthritis makes this seemingly easy procedure rather difficult. With @brian's tool, it's easy.
