Oh, I agree with you! Life is what you make it. For sure. With rare exception.
I don't see the meme as depressing or dark. I see it as satirical. Or even sarcastic. It made me chuckle.
I'm a good boy!
Sure. I do get the sarcasm. I also believe a lot of people actually think this way!
A practical example are those who decide to not vote because they don't like any of the candidates. Or they don't think it matters. Somewhere around 50% of the population.
When I was in HS, a majority of students didn't go to games, attend pep rallies, or join in the numerous extracurricular activities. As was the tradition. So the faculty conducted a survey in all the home rooms, asking one question. You didnt have to sign it. The question was...
Why is there apathy for our school? Most kids turned the survey in blank. Others wrote something snarky or obscene (me), and the studious overachiever ass kissing kids wrote essays nobody would bother to read.
Fast forward 30 years. I make the mistake of attending a reunion. I admit it was interesting to see my classmates again. But what really captivated me was the teachers who attended. They were huddled together kibitzing with each other so I stepped in. Most of them remembered me. Some not very warmly. A couple of them were retired.
I asked them how things have changed over the years. I confess that I was leading the witness. Once all full of their hippie bullshit and fake optimism about molding young minds and changing the world, they were sullen and depressed about how self-involved and disinterested students are today. One petulantly noting and pointing a finger at me that this began with you (my age group). That was exactly the answer I was hoping for. The perfect set up to drop my truth bomb on boomer teachers who as I imagined hadn't changed at all. My reply to them was... have you considered that you were the root cause?
Mission accomplished. I waited 30 years to deliver that message. The most irritable one said, "You are still arrogant". I took it as a compliment but before excusing myself I asked, "Why are you here?" I knew the answer. Teachers are guests and don't pay for the food and booze at our reunions. I suspect they also wander around Costco to eat the free samples. Friday is kielbasa day.
It's interesting to me that an entire generation who preached they believed in justice, freedom, equality, letting a man or woman live his own life, and reject the rules and regulations of the establishment vote in great numbers against all of that. In favor of Big Brother. Now depressed and cynical, they pontificate about what's wrong with kids today.
That's what that meme reminded me of. I've been triggered! Is there a counselor on duty at PGB?
