Klinger was for comedic effect on a show that started as a comedy and drifted into a drama by the time it ended. I always like the earlier episodes because of that.
One might also recall the book/film Catch-22.
The jist of it was that if you tried to say you were crazy to get out of combat, that proves you're not crazy because self preservation is not an act of the insane.
When you know that this person is not living in a Muslim country and is pretending on 2 levels.

No VCR to record the show. Your ass had to be in front of the TV at the appointed hour if you wanted to see it. If you missed it, you had a second chance to see it in reruns in the summer.
With all that, the content was better than today. Who else finds themselves watching the old shows instead of the stuff Hollywood is churning out today?
