I agree with you there. If you can swap the barrel in a gun then isn't it 'untraceable'? The serial number doesn't magically get etched into the projectile when the gun gets fired and if you dispose of the barrel properly they will never be able to match rifling marks (which I think is b.s.to begin with). Now how is the gun going to be traced to any bullets fired.

The only thing a serial number trace can accomplish is follow the trail from the manufacturer to the distributor to the dealer to the first purchaser. It ends there.

Of course running a trace assumes that the gun was LEFT at the scene of the crime. Yeah, 'cuz in the movies, the perp ditches the gun next to the corpse. That's for real, too!
