Toyota has given up on EVs. Not.

Anybody ever heard the story about the Greek boy who couldn't leave his friend's behind? It's hard to let go of some things.

I just had to throw that in. :)

The free market isnt about consumer preference. That's bullshit they have been feeding the unwashed masses for two centuries. It's about industry and commerce. Mega corporations drove the Industrial Revolution. Today different mega corporations are driving what society considers the new normal. They create demand. It isnt organic. Transportation, mechanization, energy, mass production, communications, flight, and all the magical things that became everyday conveniences a century or two ago were not driven by the average schlub's demand. Progress is driven by visionaries, new discoveries, and money. And sometimes greed.

Then came computers and software. Again, this demand was created not imagined by the masses. It was driven by a new industry motivated by profit. Like their predecessors.

Nobody is asking for AI but it's coming. Nobody gives a fuck what is under the hood of their car. But EVs are coming. Like it or not. Resist? Go ahead. That's everyone's prerogative. I really don't give a shit what people do. Or don't do. If somebody wants to live under a bridge or walk around their town with a sign declaring the world is ending tomorrow, I just shrug my shoulders. Whatever.

History is littered with stories of people and cultures that resisted or simply rejected change. They always lose or are relegated to cult status. I'm OK with that too. Anybody who wants to become the New Amish is OK with me.

Conviction is a funny thing. There are a lot of people who genuinely believe that communism or socialism is best. Fascists too. Capitalism is not about consumer preferences. It's about making money without constraint or regulation. That's what a free market is all about. Supply and demand is not about asking people what they want. Never was. You build it then convince them they want it. That's how it works.

I'll just say I know a little about the Free Market, consumerism, marketing, etc. And yeah... the success of a product in the Free Market depends a LOT on whether consumers like it. It cannot be forced... on a Free people in a FREE market. And there are plenty of examples of shit products (that were hyped as the next best thing to sliced bread).... rejected by consumers.

That's true. That the risk you take on when you decide to sell something. My point is demand just doesnt appear. It's created. Demand and opportunity are parts of the whole. The seller or maker has to create something that people see value in. Or educate them on why it has value. The public needed to be told why electric bulbs were better than kerosene lamps.

People think that the EU government are telling citizens what to buy. Wrong. They are telling carmakers who sell cars in Europe to reduce tailpipe emissions of all new cars to zero by 2035. There is no explicit mention of EVs. When I read or her people repeat their bullshit about any government making people get rid of their cars to buy an EV it makes me fucking crazy. Dumb fucks on the interwebs repeat this nonsense often. You know why? They are stupid and get all their information from other stupid people.

What Europe is doing is not unlike the US mandate for catalytic converters and unleaded gas in the 70's. Nobody liked that either. It became mandatory as part of the Clean Air Act of 1970.

LOL! Puhleeze! In other words, they're EFFECTIVELY banning ICE cars and mandating all future new cars being EVs (by 2035).

My prediction: Those shit laws will be NECESSARILY rescinded because they are not physically feasible. Literally not possible to implement in a mobile society. Not by 2035, for sure.

Wrong.

They are banning tailpipe emissions for new cars. That's it.

Of course they know that most cars on the road today will be ready for the junkyard by 2035. Plus... actuaries tell them that the majority of people who prefer gasoline powered cars will be dead by 2035.

Nobody has been told they have to sell their gas burner by a certain date. Hasnt happened. Aint gonna happen. You just wont be able to buy a new car that doesnt meet their emission standards.

So if you love the smell of car exhaust in the morning because it smells like victory... better take care of that jalopy. BTW: Gasoline will be $25 gallon.

I don't remember seeing this. Toyota is making BEVs! I did not expect to see all electric Toyotas!

Plus it would be better to have more posts about cars than farts in this thread.

Ford and GM throw in the towel, 'taking a step back" from EVs and Toyota makes a brilliant move. As they usually do.
