Wildlife in your back yard? Post'em here!

I see nothing wrong. I wish I kept such meticulous records. I have a simpler system. If I'm happy with the target, I toss it at the range. If not, I keep shooting until happiness is achieved.

After we witnessed that metamorphosis, my wife planted a bunch of milkweed around our pool enclosure. It definitely attracts the Monarchs. In one of her short attention span endeavors, she collected some butterfly eggs off the plants and “raised” them in a butterfly cage to protect from birds and lizards. It was amazing how small the caterpillars start out and how fast they grow. Unfortunately the first 2 to reach butterfly stage had some kind of parasite and emerged from their chrysalis with deformed wings. She was quite dejected. We did release 9 healthy butterflies and she lost interest.

That’s a big boy. He appears to be eating well! I don’t see a lot of bears in my nick of the woods. That came as a surprise to me. I’ve assumed they were killed off by locals long ago and haven’t recovered

This little guy was hanging in the Waterford woodstove a few days ago. lol He left.

We also have 3 doe that frequent the 2-acre property- a safe zone, if you will. The property is a wildlife pass-through for wildlife to a pond across the road from us. I've literally seen more than 6-8 deer at a time in the middle of the night meandering through here. Also- Bears, skunks, raccoons, and of course birds of prey. Hoping to see another buck this fall here, and occasionally, we have mountain lions. Seen those twice here, as did our neighbors. I usually walk the property armed. Ya never know.

Tonight there was a doe lounging in the back field as I went to shut off some irrigation water- she got up and while keeping her distance, didn't run off. When I came back she was with another doe (and possible a third out of eyesight, and they meandered around the from of the house. I'll try and get some pix of them next time during the daytime.

I see quite a few possums. I leave them be. As ugly as they are possums eat a huge volume of insects and other pests. Especially ticks. One possum can eat 4000 ticks a day. They are one of the oldest surviving mammal species. Millions of years. We had a family not long ago hanging out and it freaked my wife out at first. She kind of warmed up to them when she saw the babies following Mom around. They don’t damage things like raccoons tend to do.
 
Right. They are ugly but they're benign and provide quite a service as you point out....never seen one around here on the premises. We did have them in Vacaville.

I detest raccoons.

Lmao my in town house about a acre, I have people stop when Im outside to ask why I always grown so many weeds. Most are for bees and butterflies. After 20yrs hard at it starting to see swallowtails here again.
I even grow separate tomatoes just for the hawk months/horned caterpillar. When I find 1 I put it on those plants. Think I got 10 this year.

Had a big opossum one a few days ago traipsing along the fence line about 75 yds away. Ran up on it to shoo it because I thought it was a feral cat. Looked at me and shrugged, and trotted away. lol

Ok, that's scary because when I was reading post #34 BEFORE I saw your post #35, the SNL "Land Shark" bit popped into my head and then I scroll down. . . 🤣 🤣 🤣
 
I got something thatll knock them spots right off.
Think my faimly is up around 8 vehicles in 10 yrs lost to deer. Lol.
It is pretty cool, cousin had group took to bedding in their carport over summer. Had a few fawns in the lot. Probably due to rain.
They base the limits on auto accidents w/ deer- Georgia you get 12 tags annual PLUS special permit and quota hunts.
Timber prices came up so last few yrs alot timber was cut. I expected limits to increase atleast in southern georgia. Not this year.
I take 4 max, unless someone I know is having issues on their farm.
 
Jerky (Onyx) staring down a balloon that flew into the yard from the neighbors... This cat gets less and less sociable every day. He used to be a "fun" cat, now he's a turd, just wants outside... :rolleyes:

He's killed just about everything in the immediate area so I think he's expanded his territory. Didn't see him all day one day last week. "hmmm, he must have finally run off..." :D No, he was locked in a room sleeping. :rolleyes:

Cats are psycho serial killers. I had a neighbor in suburban GA who let her cat out all day. This was not a farm cat who keeps rodents under control. It killed birds for no reason. I mentioned this to the neighbor, pointing out domestic cats are an invasive species and they kill millions of birds every year. I told her nicely I dont want her cat killing birds on my property.

One day I saw it stalking birds in my yard. Again. So I put a pellet in its head. Buh bye Mr. Boots.
