What ya listening to?

Regarding Joe Walsh... for me it's really not about him being good or bad. It's mainly that I don't get what he is or was trying to communicate. The stoner/addict persona or lifestyle, whether it's real or comedic, grates on me. I'm not a teatotaller by any means but never understood the compulsion to be high all the time.
Well, I've never been high in my life. Never smoked weed or did any other drug. But it's something about his lyrics and delivery that just make me smile. He's kinda goofy, I guess! His songs aren't "serious." There's a humbleness / self-deprecation and irony to his lyrics. To wit.... "Lucky That Way." I think he's acknowledging that DESPITE being a fuck-up, he was successful because he got lucky.

I'm not saying that I'm something special
But you might know my name to some degree
Sometimes I can't believe that I'm still standing
And it feels pretty good to be me

I get to live out here in California
I got a palm tree and a swimming pool
Have some fun and try to play my music
Was all I really said I could do

And if anybody asks me, Joe how do you do it
'Cause you do it with such style and grace
I just shake my head and smile
Look 'em in the eyes and say
I'm just lucky that way, just lucky

Got a good woman and she makes me happy
Most of the time I make her happy too
We decided we should live together
So we both said 'I do'

And when someone says, hey Joe, I saw you on TV
And how do you know what to play
I just shake my head and smile
Look 'em in the eyes and say
I'm just lucky that way

Started in the middle of nowhere
I didn't have far to fall
And the times I thought were the end of the world
Didn't turn out so bad after all
Yeah, I started in the middle of nowhere
I didn't have far to fall

And the times I thought were the end of the world
Didn't turn out so bad after all

I'll let you all in on a little secret
If I can share with you a thing or two
If you just act like you know what you're doing
Everybody thinks that you do

(^^^love these lines^^^)

And when anybody asks me, Joe, how do you do it
'Cause you do it with such style and grace
I just shake my head and smile,
Look 'em in the eyes and say
I'm just lucky, I'm just lucky
I'm just lucky that way
I'm just lucky that way
I'm just lucky

I dunno. People who study such things have never been able to figure out why one person likes broccoli and another can't stand it. I guess music is the same way. This guy has no appeal to me. Even way back when he was doing his own thing and quite popular. Early 70s? I was a kid when he was on the radio. Middle school. When people still listened to radio. :) I think my opinion was formed back then because the budding future wasteoids I knew all loved him. Thinking back... what was I listening to then? Robert Palmer, Lou Reed, Nazareth, Eagles, Marshall Tucker, Jeff Beck, Robin Trower, Eric Clapton to name a few. On the weird side... Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and Captain Beefheart.

Yep. Sure. Different strokes, as they say.

I also like Walsh's very unique and recognizable guitar playing style. Same goes for Lindsey Buckingham. Stevie Ray Vaughan. They're just different than the others.

I hate the taste of olives. And I've never drank coffee in my life. BLECH! Other people love both.

Ha! I was on a date with a girl in a fancy Italian restaurant. When the waiter asked if we would like sparkling or still water she said she hated the taste of Pellegrino. He looked at me and without speaking a word his eyes said "run away, son". She was quite a looker but utterly vacuous.

All I saw was a whole bunch of GAY in that video! ;)
I didnt notice. My eyes were busy.

Others, such as the late Dean Martin, made a career out of portraying being a functioning alcoholic...when in fact he was not. It was all an act. While he did in fact drink on occasion, but never onstage and never to the degree one is led to believe. It was usually apple juice in his glass in public.

And Foster Brooks was CLASSIC!

Those who DO self-medicate, and those who live in a continual state of some sort of inebriation, do so for varying reasons. Maybe because of an addictive personality. Maybe because of some deep, emotional scars- usually childhood based, etc. Maybe a combination of factors. So I try to be kind yet at the same time, for me there isn't anything much more grating than being around clearly drunk folks. Happy drunk, mean drunk, sick drunk, belligerent drunk, etc.....I hated bars and, stayed out to them save for gigs where required, and I couldn't wait to get out of there.

Been transitioning from American to Euro metal alot lately. I've been getting some weird looks at street lights when the doors are off the Jeep. Lol

Lately, classical. The usual Germans and Italians and a Russian tossed in.

When I traveled, attending a symphony was something I made a habit of. I have no musical training or talent but I truly enjoyed that.

The total opposite of the mosh pit! Put on a suit, sometimes the tuxedo. I’ve been to a lot of rock concerts over the years. Seen a lot of the big names in rock stardom. The symphony is a whole nuther thing. Worth a tryouts ent done it.

I’ve also been to the opera. That takes some getting used to. And yes… there is always a fat lady singing. :)

I used to listen to classical on NPR before they went weenietalk around here. I can still listen online or their alternate channel via HD radio but who has one of those?
An orchestra is a wonderful example of ultimate teamwork. If someone isn't doing their job, it doesn't sound good... ;)

I went to a couple "Warped Tours" with my dot when she was 14-15. Chaperone sort of thing. I gave her her space, let her do her thing, wandered around checking out the bands and people. Saw a chick with an Edgar Allen Poe tattoo--that was about the most normal tat she had. One band dot was fond of she got there early to get in front and was able to "ride the crowd" a couple times. No major injuries, just a couple bruises. I somehow missed that escapade but I did forbid her to mosh. That is more of a guy thing, anyway... :)

I had no exposure to classical music as a kid. I failed in a halfhearted attempt to play the cornet. I hated it. My father insisted on me learning to play a horn and I wanted no part of that.

I got interested in classical and symphony when a coworker of mine that I frequently traveled with suggested it. The first time, we were in London and she said, we are going to the London Symphony at Royal Albert Hall. I said OK. It was awesome. I was hooked. The hall was pretty spectacular too. It was built for listening to music almost 200 years ago.

New York, Berlin, Paris, Chicago, Moscow, DC... I have been to a lot of symphony concerts. Cant say I'm an expert on the music or the great composers but it really is a great experience. I took my son to the Baltimore Symphony at the Meyerhoff when he was ten or so. Not exactly enthusiastic. When the music started he was in awestruck. His whole world was recorded music - mostly rappers and pop kids listened to then, thru cheap headphones. Until that moment.

I'd be remiss in not mentioning it was a great date destination. The symphony and a late dinner/drinks in a fancy restaurant. Getting laid is a sure thing. :p👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨 Like ZZ Top said, Every girl is crazy about a sharp dressed man.

My sister did 4 years of clarinet in middle school. I entered middle as she advanced to high school and didn't want to play anymore. Parents expected me to play the already-owned instrument but I only lasted a week. I wanted to play drums, which wasn't going to happen.

Same I said guitar or drums. I also suggested piano. The 'rents said no to all. We had a very good piano teacher right across the street. My parents didnt like them much so that was also a non-starter. The only thing I can play is kazoo.

My eldest brother played french horn and my sister flute. They were quite good. Both were in the HS orchestra. I played baseball and was a wrestler. I was good enough at both to get the girls and do whatever I wanted with impunity. The only classes I never ditched were history and math. My SAT score and a baseball scholarship saved my ass.

Drove my old man crazy. I did not give a flying fuck about school or grades. Rebel without a clue. College was very different. Once I left home, everything changed.
