Here's my WOTD:

Well, thank you, @Racer88 ! I bought a Seiko Prospex mechanical auto-winder, put new hands on it, different bezel, loved it for a while. The it started getting inaccurate. After what I put into it, I was not going to ship it out to be regulated every few years, so gave it away on another forum. Been using a cheap Timex Expedition quartz ever since, although I still have a Seiko Cocktail Time for dressy occasions. But for me, a watch is to tell time, not "collect" or signal wealth. Tell time. Quartz is where it's at.

So, never heard of the Casio Duro until I got in this thread. I'm actually a scuba diver, so I appreciate the water resistance (not ISO AFAIK, but for $50 what do you expect?). And it's gorgeous! Have not read this entire thread, but in case you don't know about it, here is how you tell time in a second time zone with a standard dive countdown bezel.

My wife is going to Italy with my son next week, and they are 6 hours ahead of us. The only thing about this method is you need to remember whether the second time zone is ahead of you or behind you, so it's not as foolproof as a true 24-hour GMT. But again, $50. Place the top pip (60 minutes) on how many hours ahead they are (later) of or behind (earlier) the second time zone will be. If 4 hours ahead, like GMT is for me, put the triangle at 8:00, if 4 hours behind (earlier) put the pip at 4:00.

The key to this is to divide each 5 minute elapsed time mark by 5 so

5 = 1
10 = 2
15= 3
...
25 = 5
35 = 7
45 = 9
50 = 10
and so on

Here I am on Eastern time and Italy is 6 hours ahead (later) than I am.

watch.jpg

It's 9:25 a.m. here. The hour hand is past the 15, on the way to the 20 minute mark. So 15 / 5 = 3, it is 3:25 a.m. in Italy now. Or 20 / 5 = 4, 35 minutes before 4:00 a.m.

With very little practice this can become second nature and you'll be very fast with it. When I'm not tracking another specific time zone, my triangle pip stays on 8:00 so I can track GMT time. Hope some of you had not heard of this and learned something new today! Many of you knew this already, I'm sure.

Thanks for the watch idea! Love it with my NATO straps!

Just Googled this, and guess what reviewer showed up?

That dude is... like... everywhere! :LOL:

The owner of the watch blog has sort of let it go. And I haven't had much time to dedicate to writing watch reviews - and all my watch money has been going to these blasted P80 builds! LOL!

I sent a suggestion to Casio to issue a Duro model with a 12-hour bezel. CasioUSA said they'd forward it to Japan. Now that I've discovered these great, cheap, quartz watches, it kills me to spend more than $200 for a watch.

Any ideas on economical quartz models with a SIMPLE watch face, no complications and a 12-hour bezel? Thanks! @Racer88 I don't know why more watch makers don't issue 12-hour bezels. I am very facile with my method above, but a 12-hour bezel would make it simpler.

I think that is a rare beast, you might try looking for a 12 hour bezel to fit your Duro, Ali Express should have some.

Speaking of Ali, here's a $10 quartz watch from Lige which has a 24 hour bezel, but no GMT feature? I'm guessing to give you the look w/out having to pay big bucks.

I wore my Garmin "smart" watch for a couple of weeks. But today I went back "old school" to one of my favorites... Pro Trek PRW-50Y

I have not worn a watch since Sept 27 2005. I haven't had a need since then. BTW that is the day of my military retirement ceremony.
Congrats and kudos for your service.

My watch wearing has nothing to do with "work." I don't "need" a watch. I've just always worn one... since I was a kid! I think I was 4 or 5 years old in this photo.

I don't like anything hanging or on my wrists, neck, fingers or ankles. I don't usually wear a watch except while diving. I'm a fairly good judge of time elapsed and if I need verification, I'll glance at my phone. ;) I do have "old-style" clocks on the walls of the workshops.

The Seiko my mother found sans band in a bowling alley parking lot 40+ years ago and I ended up with it. The last time I wore it, it went underwater but as I wasn't much lower than 30', keeping track of time under wasn't a priority. It was working a day ago when I shook it for about a half-minute (self-winding) to show my son, but normally it just sits. Luminous spots and hands, German/English days of week, it weighs about a 1/2 pound... :D

I thought I needed a more comfortable and wearable (above surface) watch 15 years ago and bought the Acqua Indiglow. I think it was maybe $15? Good down to 50m, press the set button and it has a blue back-glow (not shown). I replaced the battery about 5 years ago--it lasted maybe 3 years and the watch just sat non-functional next to the Seiko looped around a MagLite on my desk. Since we were talking watches (my son doesn't wear either) I looked in my battery stash and happened to find the other of the 2pack of batteries and installed it. Conveniently, the date was correct because I did not set it... :)

That's a Seiko. And the current version goes for $700.

My DUH! Changes made... ;)

Reminds me of the commercial of the lady saying "My husband's not around anymore, but my Seiko is!" :D
My mistake... $372. I had the wrong model.

I do not believe the one I have will wind with the knob. It is hard enough setting the date and day as they only move forward so I never really worried about them. There are like three separate pull out steps of the knob to set the time, date or day. For S&Gs I weighed both watches and I was wrong about the Seiko weighing a half-pound--it is only a svelte :rolleyes: 3.1oz. The Indiglo is 1oz even (with bands).

My Bulova Sea King (aka "the beast") weighs in at 154 grams or 5.4 ounces! So, about 1/3-lb!
